I kind of think of Star Traders as "Pirates in Space" so some things inspired by (if not completely ripped off from) Pirates:
1) Courting Prince's Daughters
One of the side quests of Pirates was romancing the daughters of governors from various cities, with the goal being getting one to marry you. This might make a nice additional option for a frivolous side item in the palace.
2) Retirement
Instead of going until you died, in Pirates you would retire at some point. Playing longer meant you were older, likely had more wounds, etc, and it would actually reduce your quality of life. Giving the option to retire (and seeing what you might become, from a barkeep, to a spacedock mechanic to a prince) might be a nice option that could give closure.
3)Splitting the booty
No matter how well the crew is treated, eventually morale should drop if the profits aren't split and the crew disbanded. The captain at that time would get a portion of the credits as personal wealth for retirement. A new crew would need to be gathered for the next space voyage.
4) Personal Missions
In pirates, you got the chance to rescue lost family members. Similar missions of a personal nature might be a nice touch.
5) Rivals
I'd like to see named rival captains. Have rumors of their exploits. Have types: Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, Pirates, Assassins, Military Men. Have special missions working against them directly or indirectly. Delivering a package? What if a famed assassin killed the recpients before you get there. Colllecting a bounty? What if another hunter gets it first. Eventually a direct confrontation of some kind could be a highlight of a career, maybe after a multiple part quest of tracking them down, which leads too...
6) Multiple part missions
Perhaps a bounty moves from one planet to another while you are enroute, and you have to follow rumors to find them. Perhaps a passenger you need to pick up gets captured and requires you going somewhere for a rescue mission after you get rumors of where they are being held.
