Okay I was in the office working diligently on a report, and somehow had an encounter with an Alien ship in STRPG. Weird, I know ... who would give you an alien encounter while doing actual work?!
Anyway, medium-long story short, I decided, yeah why not, I'll take on this Alien brute. My ship was pretty intact and I had full health. After a number of shots too and fro, I was boarded. Toast: "Your captain was wounded". Bugger, I thought. I repelled his attack and fired my barrage guns across his engines, causing significant damage. The battle raged on, and every now and then my ship flashed as being hit, along with his. The text at the bottom of the screen showed my ship got 10 points of damage (there or thereabouts) but otherwise, all was good. I still had good hull strength, armor, and plenty of offensive power.
The battle ended suddenly though with a message saying I was defeated. What?, I thought. I looked at ship stats. 16/18 hull, but otherwise, I was still in pretty good condition.
When I looked into the defeat (and subsequent captain death) in more detail, I found I had been wounded 10 times, and my captain died of his wounds. No warning. Nothing.
Dead captain number ... well I forget what number.
Can't bring him back because I was playing Crazy.
If anyone else has had lack-of-toast-deaths, please feel free to comment as I wonder if it was just me ignoring my messaging.

Is "The Captain" a ship area that can get hit by gun/torp damage?

I have a feeling "The Captain" is such a target oldalchemist.
I don't have any proof. But I'm pretty sure there have been many times when I've been banging away on an enemies "Decks" and "Engines" and suddenly won quite unexpectedly (and too early). Examination of the battle showed the ships still had Engines, Crew, Armor, Hull, sometimes Guns and Torps. At the time I concluded that I must've shot up the enemy captain in a blast at "Decks" or "Engines".
I'd like to caveat this by noting that I've been playing merchant and smugglers on insane for a while now. So it's been a while since I've been doing heavy, non-stop, combat. It's possible that the game (or my memory, at my age) may have changed.

I don't really mind the fact that the captain can get injured during ship to ship space combat, I'd just like to know what my health is each time I take a hit. That alien ship was actually trying to retreat (while shooting at me) and I would have broken off the engagement if I had realized I was being slowly converted into a pile of swiss cheese.

Screw that. I want an award for my Captain taking a hit from a torpedo, saving the ship, and living to tell about it.
"We've got one hull point left and the engines are spewing the last of their radiation into the void. I'll block that Cadar love note with one of my mighty ears!" "Captain, you saved the ship! We were able to sent those maniacs into oblivion with a lucky shot from the deck guns! Sweet Glistening Epaulets! There's a live torpedo warhead stuck in your ear, Captain!" "What? What's that? I can't hear you, I've got a torpedo in my ear!"

slayernz -- this is fixed in the latest version, you can see the Captain's health in a Toast every time it changes, no matter how
