Okay, I was thinking long and hard about it, as I sat there, urging my party to once more attack this demi-god of a foe that is the Deathkin. I understand that Deathkin have high HP, and can deal out damage like they had miniguns rather than blades. My Outlander has more HP than them (just), and can almost do 1/2 the damage, albeit only 3 strikes vs the 4 the Deathkin can dish out. The one thing that I feel makes the Deathkin unbalanced (and maybe Giant Rats and Shamen for that matter) is the natural armor that they have.
Take a typical beast ... a lowly Ratkin Warrior. My level 3 outlander can dish out around 15-30 damage with the stock gear. The wizard, with Firebolt 2 can deal between 15-24 damage. However, against a Shamen, the outlander more often than not swings and misses, and when he does hit, the average damage is only about 10. The wizard's Firebolt 2 often does zero damage, but sometimes does as much as 10.
So sure, give us foe that has high numbers of hitpoints, and does ferocious damage. BUT, don't give us foe that has 10x better armor than our characters. It is not very even/balanced where your best character can dish out 10 points of damage, maybe twice in a round, and in return, gets hit 4 times (Deathkin miss very few times) for around 30-50 per time. If the perfect enemy has high HP, high damage, and high armor, then let's not have him encountered until much much later in the game when our party has a chance to get to that level as well. The warrior would need armor that offers +40, and a 1H sword that does 50-80 damage to be competitive otherwise.
