Thanks for the welcome, fallen and beuns! Much appreciated.
Er, especially appreciated because it sounds like this thread had gone fallow for a really good reason. I think what you're trying to tell me, beuns---and very kindly---is that I just bemoaned at length the difficulty of a baddie which is no longer anywhere near as bad as it used to be, before I ever found the game.
Ahem. *whistles casually* *Tries to discreetly pick up and dust off lost dignity*
So, um, about fixing the flaws in my party...fallen, it's funny that you mention the "buffs" (a term I learned here on the forum, along with "tank" and "AoE"!). I was actually thinking that that (first?) Deathkin fight showed me that I might be too reliant on the buffs and curses. I buff everyone before every fight, even put them in a cross formation to let Kjartan get every team member at one go if possible, while the folks with self-only buffs cast theirs in the same turn.
Then in combat, the K-named duo curses and anguishes every opponent as their AP allows, while Tamilin and Vraes hit for HP damage. I try not to have any heroes attack anything that hasn't been cursed/anguished yet.
But after (during!) the Deathkin fight, I was thinking that I haven't made my characters truly tough enough, just been coasting on the ease of taking opponents down after cursing/anguishing has made them more squishy. I also think that I built a team that is pretty effective as a team...but not so effective as individual fighters.
So against something like the Deathkin, with gigantic AP levels, it became way obvious that I rely almost entirely on Vraes to take damage and keep it from the other characters, as well as to take down everything in melee range by himself (with Tamilin helping from a slight distance). This means my two spellcasters aren't much good at actual fighting; Kjartan, for example, only has Firebolt 1 and Immolation 1. He loves the heck out of AoE fire damage...but he'd be much more offensively effective if I improved his skills related to hitting things with it. And everyone needs better armor and/or dodge---all my deaths have been from ambush situations, where Vraes didn't have time to get between his teammates and harm.
That sort of thinking! And I'll stop now; there's probably threads dedicated to those kinds of musings, not this one.
Beuns, I'd love to get over to the CK forum! Let me spend a little more time with Heroes of Steel, and I'm sure I'll make it there after. Sadly, my life doesn't allow for more than one engrossing game at a time...
