I notice that the fuel calculator in Status - Cargo appears to compute your Water Range based on the integer number of units on the ship, rather than the floating point number of units displayed on the main map screen. Is that intentional? I noticed that the Fuel Report does not change when I Blockade or Patrol, though some fuel is used up, unless it uses up enough to make the integer number of units change.
I think the floating point value should be used in the fuel report to compute Water Range (because it's more accurate), and shown in the report like Luxuries / Turn:
Fuel Report Red [Green] Water-Fuel 35.485 Water Range . . . .

I have been trying to figure out the fuel calculation, and optimize the water / turn in red, and notice that improving Pilot skill helps to a point, but improving it more can actually increase the water fuel usage. Is that intended or just a side effect of the way it is calculated? To illustrate what I mean, here are some screen shots of Captain Vince Wilder's status at level 93 with Pilot 55 flying a Pride of De Valtos with Titan Components -- this was the "sweet spot" for red fuel usage: I have never seen better than that. One other time I got down to .003. What I don't understand is why the water / turn in red got worse when I improve my Pilot skill to the next level: It got 7x worse by upping my Pilot from 55 to 56! I don't see morale affecting the water / turn, so I don't think the difference in morale is related. It seems like you have to leave your Pilot skill alone to keep the ultra-low water / turn once you find the optimal Pilot skill for the ship you have. Shouldn't it continue to approach zero as your Pilot skill gets better (or at least not get worse)?

that looks like a side effect of the equation. something is dropping to a minimum value and changing the scalar that's generated. let me investigate...

I also encountered for the first time something strange with fuel calculation (maybe it's been like that, but I never noticed it).
Playing on insane, captain level 60, Turn 15900, Honor of Thulun ship with 16 hull, 41 sails and 33 engines, full crew (70/70) and full cargo (70/70), Pilot 50, Intimidate 25, my Consumption per Red square is 0.225 WF.
I go to explore a planet (at this level most explorations are nasty), lose 49 crew and bump!, my fuel consumption per red square gets to 0.014 WF. I didn't sell any cargo in the meantime so I'm still full, I just did this to demonstrate the case.
So it seems advantageous to keep the ship running with 15-20 crew instead of having full crew as mentioned in the blog post about WF consumption.
My first thought was that my crew was a bunch of fat bellied drunkards and when I got rid of them, it was such a relief and my ship could sail faster. But if this is the case, I have not found any way to hire any lean body-building young staff. Every time my crew number changes I get similar results for WF consumption (more crew -> more consumption and vice versa).

Do more experienced crewmen use less water?

It IS possible to get 0.000 water / turn in red. Vince is now at level 124 (10780 XP) with these stats: CHA 58 WIS 64 QUI 85 STR 105 EXP 58 PIL 79 NEG 58 TAC 60 STE 83 WAR 105 (warrior is IMPORTANT! ) INT 58 His ship is a Frontier Freighter with Ancient Reactors, Leviathan System, Cargo Vault, Titan Components, and Omni-Stealth Array: Hull 38 Armor 13 Engines 37 Sails 45 Crew 100 Cargo 192 Guns 20 Torps 4 And his water / turn is 0.000 in red and green, for infinite range in both. But only if (1) sails are undamaged, (2) crew is exactly 100, and (3) I don't raise my Pilot or Intimidate any more (raise either one and I am sure I will get 0.014 in red again). Cory, can you make the water / turn in red work like it does in green and "max out" at 0.000 / Infinity instead of 0.014? I want to be able to keep raising my Pilot and Intimidate, and to switch to ships with smaller hull, and keep my 0.000 in red.

To get 0.000 in green at the start of the game choose a pilot class with the Neq.

Well, it says 0.000 water / turn in red, but it isn't actually working out that way. When I move around in red squares, the floating point value for water on the main map appears to go down steadily by .1 for each red square under ideal conditions. That's actually much worse than my other ships with smaller hulls where it says 0.014 water / turn in red.
When I blockade, it goes down by some smaller value (<.1). If I get lucky and no sail damage happens, it goes down by .1 on the main map screen every 4 blockade actions, though the fuel calculator shows 0.000 in red.
I'd love to know the nitty-gritty details of how the actual calculation is done (i.e. the "secret formulas" for red and green water / turn). It would be pretty cool to be able to make a little spreadsheet for calculating fuel efficiency based on relevant character and ship stats. That would be very useful when shopping around for new ships or ship upgrades, to see what the water / turn would be for you at that time (since purchases and upgrades can't be undone).
By the way, I'm really into your game and I can't wait to see the next ones. Vince is now level 137 and facing enemies over level 200. BTW, what is the highest level you've ever seen a Captain get to on Crazy or Insane?

Maybe your crew are thirstier when you're flying through hazardous space ... I haven't gotten a captain up to 137 in Crazy before ... that's pretty darned good

I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes, I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it if I am; Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty ...

slayernz, you are a water-fat liability of a crewman! I'd never recruit you if you didn't have such a fine mustache.
