I always get the dataport and memory implants for the option to do locked file jobs, regardless of my build.

Actually having some dv just means there is a chance that you won't get xp in encounters. I have a ck with 100 odd dv, and every once in a while he won't get xp when the runners with him do at the end of encounters. It rarely bothers me though.

On the easier levels you can advance fairly well without needing much in the way of implants, but the whole point of this type of game is there is no one right way to play. My first play through of MNB I used every bit of cyberware I could get my prosthetic hands on, but then reached the point where the character had nowhere to go. I started a sandbox game with Ghost, determined to learn from her mentor's mistakes, avoiding using cyberware. Both were equally enjoyable.

ST says "choose wisely, for you cannot go back, once your choice had been made". CK does not. Each are great options, but the game design is different. The best use of cyberware is to convert money + new runners into effective fighters fast. A new cybersword ganger and 80K in warez is a very, very good bodyguard. Protip -- a bit of DV can help you blend in and keep your total XP lower, which means less negative attention for your squad. That is an awesome point. I never thought of that. I'm going to try that with my next Knight. Dermal Sheathing and skill chips are all I usually get until later in the game.

I tend to be quite heavily augmented, but that's because I generally play a hacker and it's not really avoidable. And Deus Ex is definitely quite CK-like - I've got all 3 of them, but I'm only part-way through the first one so far. Yes its not really ideal to play the hacker without some cybernetics involved.besides, their warfare is waged digitally and more subtlety than other classes. upload link received...beginning upload...

My initial thoughts:
Working on my first play through(s)and going for the Well Rounded Unaugmented Human Lone Gunslinger approach with a team. Putting off investing in a side kick for one team. Another team lost a few runners when I got too ambitious in a series of jobs north of the wall.
Long term is to start adding cyber when attributes and skills start topping off. Will likely get an alley that I cyberize right away (takes too long to build them up from scratch, esp if you have to start over after one dies.
Unaugmented: Pro: Quicker XP gain verses higher augmented knights. Con: No cyber bonuses. Tip: The extra XP needs to go to skill development to make up for the loss of cyber implants.
Well Rounded: Pro: Tends to do well in most random events regardless of the nature of the event (defuse bomb, evade, intimidate, negotiate better pay; not so good on negotiate missions). Cons: Combat skills are a little lower than what they could be if the extra XP was devoted to Body / Dex / Firearms etc. Tip: Does well on a lot of missions so far, be cautious with missions that need a single high skill to pull off.
Loner: Pro: You save money on not hiring, equipping a ally or runner and don't have to go through the emotional loss of losing a very developed alley. Con: You can get outgunned pretty easily north of the wall. Tactical retreat becomes your middle name. Tip: Either be very, very, careful in selecting missions while building XP -or- use the random runner saves as a throw away runners Spend $100 to save someone just to toss them to the wolves. It's cruel but works.
Gunslinger: 570 total XP Broken down: Body: 8
Strength 6 Athletics: 6 Brawling: 6
Dexterity 8 Stealth: 8 Firearms: 8
Mind and all mind attributes and skills are at 5 across the board. Misc: Highest rep is with Fennian Gang (Senior Original Gangsta). Lowest rep is with Los Val (Legendary Slum Rat). I kept the underground riviary going in the southern NBZ.

Based on the help manual: DV is a 300 sided dice. Roll above your DV score and you get XP. Roll under it and you don't (what happens when you tie?) thus a few mile markers for DV and XP gain are: DV: Chance of getting XP 000 : 100% 050 : 83% 100 : 67% 150 : 50% 200 : 33% 250 : 17% 300 : 0

In CK the die is 300-sided, so there is no 000-side. This means you have a 1 in 300 chance of getting no XP even if you have no cyberware at all installed, so no DV. Just FYI. Grävling

Completed Made, Not Born with an Unmodified Knight. Maxed a gunslinger's stats to Human Limits. It takes a lot of grinding to max stats.
Random note, after maxing human stats, I added the best cyber gear I could find that added (rather than "set to") stats. From Unmodified Knight to CyberZombie.
