I don’t mean this in a metaphysical sense, but rather as it applies to this game. I have started my first game – I really love it and I am doing well (at least well enough to be happy).
But last time I fought a pirate it made me wonder what would happen if I lost. Can I reload? I don’t see how, because I do not save, the game just keeps track of my progress. I don't want to "try and see what happens" in case I ruin my game.
Similarly, what if I accidentally attack a ship from my faction, is there any way to “do over”?
Thanks for any help!

If your are on normal or basic then you can continue. If you are on anything above Normal then it is game over for that captain. Period.

I should add that there's no way in the game to "do over" something either.
So watch for who you're attacking. And just remember that (generally) if you do anger your faction by killing someone you can pay the fine and buy a pardon at the Palace on one of your faction's worlds.

The Status button is your friend. Learn to use it.
Also, if you don't know if you're going to win the encounter, RETREAT. You want your captain to live a long life? Don't anger factions. Spend points in Stealth and spend money on a fast ship.
You want an exciting life? Learn to like the character generation screen.

A little waterproof caulking between the screen cover and snap-on case and you're good to go abs!
