You don't want to port a dead captain. That's how you get space zombies. Yes, I realize it's mostly pointless, but my first award was earned on a now-dead captain. Thankfully, I bought Elite** very soon after trying out the free version and got the award again pretty easily, but others may not have been so diligent. To the OP: Play Elite. Keep the free version on the phone to hold your awards so that if/when you can port them in the future--voila. Elite is so much bigger and nicer. I was actually quite overwhelmed at the new size, needing to keep track of zone types and fuel usage and planning routes, so the higher difficulties are seriously challenging and fun. **Bought on Amazon. Please update for Amazon app store. I can't play the newest version!

I post updated to Amazon as regularly as I do the Android Market, however, Amazon uses an application approval team that works during the week and takes several business days to test the application.
Trust that I am doing my best to support Amazon's App Store!
I am working to provide a data porting utility but I am finding out that I made some mistakes back in August when I initially deployed the ST RPG game to Android Market.
There is a setting called SharedUserID that can not (never) be added if you do not add it the very first time. That is, unfortunately, the setting that would make this easy.
Instead, it is really hard and I have not yet figured it out for ST RPG. Trust and believe that Templars, CyberKnights, Pirates and ST RPG II will all have this setting turned on from DAY #1.

Lets say that the full database backup is out.
What if you could extract your awards as an encoded string, say a block of 400 magic characters something like this:
=== STAR TRADER RPG AWARDS == eJztzwEJACAQwMBPpAnsX8sQgjC4wQLcmpll27a/voO/eGud4eXl5W3Ey8vLW4mXl5e3Ei8vL28lXl5e3kq8vLy8lXh5eXkr8fLy8lbi5eXlrcTLy8tb6dV7AeQe9tM= eJzt2bkKwkAURuGJS6Fl3sjHUCu10rjhjoVa+ODewiIMlyGYRDI354dDqgE/0kjGOcYYY4yxepfmeiulDatKbwzhxYv3f96eNMjVL3BmnDg38ZomcXjlZ7qh1Pk+uwXOzOTQ3Gth2LuUQyuvzLD3LodGXge8eCP1hqrSW8f/5SZ72/Z+8eLFixcvXrx48eLFixcvXrzt8G6lndLeqPciXZVuRr0P6an0MurNpLXSxqj3KJ2Uzka92rf+/Pd+a96y4W2+N3TfbtEbum+36A3dt1v0hu5j8eKNzVsmvHjx4sX72z5wXbjG == STAR TRADER RPG AWARDS ===
Would that be helpful? Then you could at least extract all your awards and move them between phones (or even, god help us, to your friends.)

I think if you wanted to make sure the unlocks didn't get passed around to friends, then part of the encoded data would include the name of the account that was used to purchase STRPG Elite. After all, you've got to know that information because of the google checkout validation check thingy.
This means that the user could migrate unlocks from one device to another, BUT only if they use the same account logon in both devices.
Personally though, I would still want to have an individual captain shipped from one device to another, but that's because I've invested so much of my life to getting them to stand on their own two feet, I almost feel a paternal bonding with them. I HAVE to have them move to any new device because I sure as hell am going to insist they help pay for my lifestyle when I retire.

Ok I see more the difficulty now is trying to implement this in a way that discourages cheating... I had not actually thought of using it that way. For me this would be a once off on installing elite to a device, so it does not matter how difficult it is to do. Linking both saved captains and awards with codes to the account in some way would be great. Would this work copying awards from RPG to Elite though since the first was not registered, or can you access the google account name. Anyhow don't stress over it too long on account of a few of us when you are already developing it so excellently in other areas.
Thanks for the continued efforts

You can still migrate free captains to elite with ease. I agree that having the rewards would be a nice thing to have, but the lack of those things being copied over is partially mitigated by your living captains.
If you have living captains in Free that have enough of "schplot" to achieve an award (where schplot = the required rep points, number of kills, number of ranks, etc), then when you next pop into a hall of records, you will be granted those awards.
The ones that won't be given would be the time-limited awards (rapid ranks, etc).

Never let slayernz name variables.

Not without requiring extensive commenting at least.
I can totally see myself, having chosen a variable like that, six months in the future and going, "Hrmmm, what was this for again?".

Hi, sorry to necro this thread, but I thought you'd like to know we got sick of waiting, not just days, but sometimes a couple of weeks between Amazon updates. I kept the free version from Market to know when you actually updated things, but I was all sad faced cause I knew Amazon would take for friggin ever! So my husband and I finally said "Screw it! Let's buy it again from Market!" because it's just that good of a game! Enjoy the extra bucks. ;D

I am really sorry.
Amazon does not listen to small developers.
I have begged (literally, begged) them to help me with a few issues and they have not even written me back.
Worse than that, I cannot give out refunds.
If it wasn't going to screw over like 300 people I'd just pull the darn thing and say "#$%#%$# You, Amazon."

Aww, you're so cute! I wasn't being sarcastic. The post was not intended to make you feel bad in any way, but to let you know we thought it was simply that good of a game to buy twice. We were going to do so right away when you told us that the slow updates were Amazon's fault a few months ago, but we weren't sure if we were comfortable with putting our credit card number on the phone. But then there were some other Android Market-only stuff that we really wanted, so we caved... and also bought Star Traders at the same time. We're not at all annoyed with *you*, so don't be sorry, just say thanks! It was never about the money and we don't want a refund, because we have been wanting to donate MORE to you, in fact. Do you have Paypal or something?

I have seen the concern about cheating and this is kinda what stance I have taken about it:
This is a game. There is no good way to compare one persons score to another, there is no good way to compete. The awards are great for people that like earning things however, you should not be afraid to give someone the ability to cheat when it helps the people who want to use it legitimately and it wont negatively impact the legitimate users.
The copy paste will be a PAIN to type in that much (though copy and paste is likely out) however who cares if someone uses it to unlock something they shouldn't? The idea of a game is to allow the user to enjoy spending time with it. The negative impact of losing stuff you already did is far worse then whatever impact a possible unlock exploit can cause.
If thats what it takes I would say go for it.
