So, after making a successful comeback to the game, I've decided to dabble in each of the default classes(haven't unlocked the others yet). It's been interesting, because the one I thought would be the hardest has turned out to be my most successful.
My current military captain Raptus Belarus(I like trying to create original characters) is level 16 in the year 118.34 AE. He is a level 16 Immortal Titan Sergeant in the Cadar military, as well as a rank 3 Zealot in the Steel Song military. Everyone else hates my guts.
I managed to steal me a bad ass ship from some unlucky Javat scum captain, and now I just spend my time doing surveying and blockading planets to piss off my enemies. I'm not prejudice in my wanton genocide against the Cadar(and even Steel Song) enemies. It's pretty satisfying.
The reason I thought this class would be hard to play was due to the amount of direct contact with enemy(and possibly alien) ships. So far, it's actually been very profitable.
What is your easiest class?

I haven't played a whole lot yet so I haven't gotten every trick down, but IMO it's probably the explorer.
Money is easy salvaging planets and you make a ton, you rarely get into surprising danger since you can stay up to date on rumors and read the "risk," and it's not hard to stay in relatively good favor with every faction.

So far the easiest class for me is Spy, followed by Pirate and then Zealot.

Of course my military captain bites the dust right after posting this.
On my way back to Cadar Prime from a decently long voyage out to the fringe worlds, and I run into a De Valtos gunship. My ship was in mint condition, go to board their ship, my 8 hull points disappear in one shot, and my captain and crew get sucked into the vacuum. And I had just hit Star Hero of 151+, and was going to head to the nearest palace to record it.
Damn De Valtos bastards.

Combat classes are always vulnerable to an unlucky roll of the dice.
I found Smuggler to be easy once I had 6 faction ranks. As long as I was patient, I wasn't in any real danger. That means running from every fight, spending tons of cash on spice rounds and rumors.

makes me happy that there isn't one clear winner in these first 5 posts.
for me, it's the bounty hunter. pick your fights and you'll never loose =)

Bounty Hunter? Seriously? I can't keep one of them alive on harder levels to save my life! errr...to save his life?
What is your general Bounty Hunter strategy?

I'd second Bounty hunter, although there is the threat of being rammed, i recently lost a captain to that (I think).

You gotta use Bounty Hunter powers -- take lots of high priced bounty prices and stalk your target. If he's getting carried around in a Jango class, don't fight. Wait till you catch him in a Shuttle.
I like to stick to hunting in the galactic core, which usually means taking jobs from a corner planet to get the range right. Since I play Thulun, that's the Kalfange or the Thulun Mining Camp.
My never ending hatred of Cadar sends me deep into Syndicate territory -- I usually broker a deal with De Valtos (even tho they make my skin feel all dirty) so I can refuel.
I will survey, watch and wait for the target -- boom. My bounty hunter never turns down a job -- but he reps up and gets the edict quick so he can take jobs at the palace.
For a bounty hunter the palace is the way to take jobs. My ship is setup for speed and stealth (get in, get records, get the target and get gone) not blockades. I avoid the military base missions for this reason.
I carry a mix of illegal trade goods, water fuel and rations. Luxury rations are good in orbit. use them. records and electronics are boosters for the BH skill. weapons are how i take them down.
If you break the Captain's legs you win the battle and he's captured. I alway go for the capture -- if we have to scuttle her at the end, so be it. but i'll take cargo and crew first, thank you.
BACKUP SHIPS: you need them. get at least one. you know you'll get into that situation where you need it. goal #1 is not an upgraded ship -- it is a captured ship. then, we start looking for ship #2. don't upgrade. wait.
you don't know what you need yet.

for me the joy of the bounty hunter is the long job. it's 42 sectors away -- and the guy is a royal in Cadar military (probably Andrew's character, Lanzo)
I know he's deep inside bad guy zone, but I have time to stalk. Move a pile of water-fuel to a nearby planet (you can cache without expire) and wait. he's not going to get away.
The point where I shout "You're mine now, Cadar boy!" at my phone is pure joy. I had to let him escape and then re-surveillance his trail 6 times. He has had a major escore every time -- to risky, but today I got him in a Military Shuttle.
Torp, Advance, Advance, Gun, Board ... get vicious. When I deliver the scrap of fabric that was his hat to Thulun Prime ... 185,000 credits. A new ship and 3 years in the spice halls of Bellix and Rinze...

Err .. so how do you do bounty hunter missions where you can let the target go only to re-find him later on? I thought once the target escapes, it's pretty much a failed contract.
I once tried playing Thulun but found they were as sharp as ball bearings, and as dense as one too, and I felt compelled to ram anything that floated into my flightpath. I think my one and only Thulun captain lasted just under a year.

oh dear! Bounty Hunters (and to a less extent, military officers) can use Surveillance to get the "Target has been tracked. We can attack at our leisure, Captain." toast.
Once you have that Toast, you can "Attempt Contract" and enter battle. If you do not like the looks of the target's escort, break off (he could be hostile, like riding with pirates tho) and you might see a Contract Failed dialog, but it will be modified with some text that says something like "He has not gone far. We tracked the landing location on the planet's surface..."
At that point you repeat the surveillance cycle. of course, this all burns fuel and angers the natives, but i'm on the job.

I can't believe I've never seen this before! it's so awesome!!! I just used surveillance as the "Let's annoy Steel Song" tactic when I was bored and picking for a fight

I find the option to surveill the target its particularly good with "traitor contracts".
So if I get the info on my target, then move to attack and find that's a faction ship he's on, I just pull back and do some more surveillance and attack again. Sometimes our takes a few rounds of this to catch my target on an Indep ship, but for me it's totally worth it.
(unlike Cory I don't wait until they're in a weak ship, I probably should though since the point shouldn't be "honorable combat", but damn if I don't love a good fight.)
I don't know how Cory's getting those prices though. I usually get like fifty thousand for a journey across the whole galaxy. Which is why I usually take five contracts in the same rough area and then go there and do them all.

Bah, I just seem incapable of keeping any captain but the military one alive for more than a year. Quite frustrating.
