Map Movement

Great game, but why is movement often restricted in certain directions. Since you can't plot a course directly to a different quadrant, I travel using arrows...but it gets frustrating when I am trying to complete a commission and can't take the most direct route. Please advise. Thanks.

you can long press the arrows when there is a pre-programmed route (alinged with wind as best I can)

you can tap the arrow to go that way until you hit land, or the next map.
