Heh -- I was feeling a little down on myself that day.
The ST RPG myth is that the doctor technologist is the only one who knows his or her trade, each doctor is unique. Mostly independents, these doctors travel a set schedule moving between Faction worlds and extracting exorbitant pay.
None dare interfere for risk of a doctor ban (hey that should be a rumor -- no doctors for De Valtos for 50 years!)

I was actually surprised (unless I just haven't seen reference to or found him) there was no doctor type officer. Perhaps functioning somewhat similar to the mechanic but in terms of health. Spice for some % of increase to chance and Vudka for half that.
The game is similar to various sci-fi type storylines and I can think of a good number of them that have ship medics in better more established ships. The Trek series for example... Or Firefly even. It seems to potentially fit the idea of the game too if I'm not mistaken?

Recall in firefly it was merely incidental they had a doc on board, wasn't standard by far and probably couldn't afford one that didn't need to stay low. Srar trek was a requirement.
Here goes my thinker again, if there is ever to be a doc officer, only allowed to be on ships with large crews. I do not stand strongly behind that idea.
@cory, i only just thought to consider after reading your post how oyr endless list of ideas as well as exclaiming our frustrations of not being able to find the exo crawler must be hard to read on a daily basis. You do fine work, i hope that in my barrage of ideas i will someday produce a gold nugget for you.
Thank u for making ST and caring enough about us to listen to us :-)

Yes but aren't the officers we find in ST also rather incidental as well? You either stumble across one (coincidence) or follow rumors to try and snatch one up (a little better than coincidence but as they may or may not be at a location you have a "rumor" for still a bit of a coincidence) Granted, I don't think the large crew thing is unreasonable either. I don't think a double cut (like 4% for example) would be unreasonable either.

Also as I recall there seem to be a bunch of Officer Unlocks already set up for potential achievements that aren't showing a required difficulty level. Alternatively perhaps a new tier to the Excellent Patient award of being healed of 8 or more 10 times on Impossible difficulty or something. Just seems like it would be an easy and obvious one to me but who knows. Even on the crazy and above difficulties I've not had a lot of difficulty finding doctors willing to heal me nor the price too terrible unless it's in the very VERY beginning of a new game so it seems like this wouldn't be much different than the Mechanic. Even setting one aspect of it up like the scout (protects crew from death during space travel for example) being his standard ability to allow implementation right off and later if you unlock the award he can heal the captain too. That said, my original post wasn't intended to criticize the game nor the designers. Just express my surprise it wasn't included with all the others that are there. Would it have been preferable for me to add a "Jettison the old first mate out the airlock in deepspace" comment?

There are probably better ideas out there. I saw the same sorts of things in Wish List already so he's probably already seen or is considering it. Something I'm not entirely clear on is I think I read somewhere that the first mate not only helps slow the loss of morale to your crew but reduces your water usage? I can't find the reference for the life of me and the search button is faulting out every time I try to use it. Am I just remembering nonsensical things or am I just losing it? If he doesn't I'm replacing him with the mechanic.
