The cheapest way to max out your stats is to keep your Strength and Dexterity values as close as possible and keep Intelligence and Perception as close as possible. If you max out one before working on the other.

Lets say you start at 1 in each of Strength and Dexterity

Increasing either Strength or Dexterity to 9 will cost you 6 points to raise to 2; 8 for 3, 10 for 4 12 for 5; 14 for 6 16 for 7 18 for 8 20 for 9 (104 points). Then each point in the other attribute will cost 36 points (36*8=288 points). For a total of 392 points

If you alternate between Strength and Dexterity it will cost you 336 points total.

I have no idea if the game penalizes you for following an optimal path by increasing the difficulty level according to your accumulated XP, (in which case, perhaps the extra 100+ points of extra XP cost for a more specialized builds might seem cheap. (read startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/2569/xp-allocation for what you might need for survivability).

After some experimentation (with a Male 2) I raised my Strength to 5 and then started raising my Dex, I progressed my Intelligence and Perception evenly. I ended up with a very survivable character with significantly more AP. I definitely think that alternating between Intelligence and Perception early on is something to think about. I just started with raising my male 2 AgentEX (the highest starting point value) strength to 3, my athletics to 5 and then started building up everything evenly and my AP got to 7 very quickly. After that you just play whatever sort of game you want. I did not really notice a huge difference in how tough the enemies were but I avoid most fights and use the accelerated start startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/2570/accelerated-start-spoiler which gives me enough of a head start on gear to weather any weaknesses early on. I play normal so I don't know if this could possibly work on brutal but I have not died on normal.

The game very much determines how nasty the opponents you get based on how much XP you have. Deciding not to train your XP and keeping it all as 'Ready' doesn't work either. And the accelerated start on brutal only gets you about 4K these days, while a 2 job computer costs 5.8K.
