I've been getting a message after multiple explorations that says "explorer special ability." What does this mean? It's not creating records of any kind and I don't think I'm getting a bump in my explorer skill.

It means that he manages to save himself from harm during an exploration encounter. This too confused me at first. It's a lot like the Scout Officer's special ability where he can negate damage to you or the crew during exploration.

awe, hmmm, it would be nice if he could create some sort of special exploration records similar to the merchant, but I guess his job is easy enough already.

If every captain had a special ability to make records, then it wouldn't be very special now would it? =P
Honestly though, it makes sense. Much like the Bounty Hunter and Military Officer can use surveilance to relocate bounties(provided their ability kicks in), or the Pirate's ability to completely ignore morale loss when pissing off the Independants, the Explorer needs something unique to their class.

Well, Explorer's get some wound protection and have better protected caches than other captains. So the game claims there are some advantages they get that other captains don't.
They may not be the greatest abilities, but they surely suit the role.
And given how easy an explorer captain is to play, compared to other types, I'm not convinced they need buffing. But that's just my proverbial two cents.

Explorer's special ability is incredibly special. I will revise the toast to state "Explorer Special Ability Saved 32 Crew and 1 HP damage!"

I think it needs more fluff text than that.
"The Explorer's special ability has saved the day! 32 of your 80 crewmates have survived the horrors of the acid pools of Gleelok-4! With the might of your powers, you even managed to prevent losing all 13 of your fingers! WAY TO GO!"

ha! I like it, I agree with revising the text to some extent, especially when your officer saves some crew. It's unclear how many they saved when I lose most of my party and it will add much to the game play.

That would be a nice change to the text. It also lets you know that you are getting some extra benefit too... or that you see that you're getting some use out of the special ability

I have lost crew and taken damage to the captain even when the toast pops saying the ability is used.

I think it still saved you from losing even more crew.

Correct that is why the toast needs to be more descriptive because the current toast doesn't tell you enough to understand what is happening. it is on my list to fix.

yah the game always says the same thing, it's like when the hero says "Oh, darn, I seem to be hurt. But I think I will ..." and he falls over, head. I think that guy is a hero.
