Hacking's changed a bit since the other guide was written, so I figured someone should probably write a new one, and I've got some time, so I might as well do it. Anyway...
Upon connecting yourself to the Net, you'll see the output window taking up most of the space, with 3 buttons either side of it, the name and faction of the node above it, and your Heat and Time bars to the left of the name. Time decreases with every action you take (except one, which I'll get to), and tells you how long you have before security gets a lock on you and your connection is force-terminated. Heat tells you how much Heat you've got, and will be going steadily upward as you progress through the Matrix. Be careful, as it can get very, very high (I once did a Net run that gave me over 4000 Heat - the trip to my safehouse didn't go well).
The 3 buttons to the left of the screen are what you need to pay attention to right now though - starting from the bottom (because it's easier to explain that way), they are:
-System readout (the red one), which is always present and gives you information such as the security rating of the current node (1-10, Green to Gold, with 10/Gold being the most secure), your computer's available memory, and its armour rating (this is increased by loading armour programs, which I'll get to).
-Load Program (two devices with arrows between them), which lets you load programs to improve the stats of your computer, though currently the only one available is Armour.
-Hack Firewall (the blue box), the first stage in hacking a node. This is the button you want to press to progress through the layers of security protecting your target.
Once you've hacked the firewall, that icon is replaced by two more - Disconnect (the 4 dots with a cross in the middle), which takes you out of that node, and Hack Access (the chain), which is your next step.
After Access, you've got another two new icons - Deploy Decoy (the red cone), which, if it works, can get you a little more time (it can be run several times consecutively), and Hack Root (the key), which is the next step.
Once you've hacked Root, you can't Decoy - your only option is to Hack Network, which is when things really open up. Once you've done that, the output window gives you a list of nodes you can connect to - cycle through them by repeatedly hacking Network, and connect to the one you want with Connect to Host (the one that looks like the opposite of Disconnect).
After you've connected to a node and hacked its Firewall, you get another option - Search for Paydata (the folder with lines going to other folders). Hit that, and you'll either get the output window saying Null Volume In Drive, or the Download Paydata button - hit that and the data's yourss (you can search the same node several times - there's data to download until you get Null Volume).
I think that's pretty much it - if anything's unclear, or I've missed something, just ask.
