In Star Traders you can make enemies with few (not all) of the Houses and Syndicates just fine. The neutral systems and the few friends can keep your fuel supply good enough to play the games and do the contracts. If you have a big enough cargo hold and good pilot skill, even in Hard mode you can have enough to travel into the corners of the map and come back.
For Age of Pirates, that is a totally different story!!! Each of the map segment is huge and there are good amount of them. In my current (first game) with Normal difficulty, running out of rations is a constant threat. I am in good standing with Ruesland and Cadari but essentially vile to the rest of them in the upper half of the map. Therefore I cannot survive long enough to search for Galda Fenn in WhiteCliff, raiding ships don't generate enough rations...
Time to start over I guess.

It is a fine line we sail as captains of Laanbrakar. I have found it best to pick one nation to be a sworn enemy of and the other to be a stalwart ally to. For me, I have an undying hatred for the vile Federation of Kaihmer and every single game I have ever started they have borne the brunt of my wrath. As such, I only ever play as either Ruesland or the Cadari and am a true friend to the other, solely on the merits of not being of the foul Kaihmer. This makes it easy to tell which commissions are best for you to take, as you know who your enemies are. The pirates and trading companies are interesting- for me, all pirates are fair game and are a great source of smugglers and merchants to plunder. However, the trading companies should be examined to fit the main areas of the nation you belong to. Example: When playing as Ruesland, you would be smart to keep the peace with the East Acadian TC, as they have many strategic ports around Acadas you can utilize. Decide how you want to play before you even set sail, know your enemies, but more importantly know your allies and the ports they command, as you will always find yourself in a remote region and it is nice to have a friend nearby for food, shot, and rum Hope this helps!

If you are attached to your captain, work your way back to friendly waters and search taverns and palaces for rumors of the Krakken and Ice Demons, as vanquishing them grants much reputation with every nation. Kill enough and you just might find yourself in good graces with some former enemies, I know I have...

I found that the there are two major hurdles in Age of Pirates: The Wind System and Scale of the Oceans Going against the wind is basically the equivilant of carrying artifacts in red zones- everything picks a fight with you and your food supplies will drop faster than kids at a fire drill. More importantly, it is VERY easy to get stranded by winds in Age of Pirates (bottom right corner of the map being a notable example) to the point where it takes forever and then some to even get to a town, nevermind getting back to reasonable wind systems. The scale of Age of Pirates also throws me off a lot- in ST, I typically carried ~45 water fuels for long-range roving; in AoP I find that I should NEVER be below 60 (I prefer 70, especially since I'm using Sveet as a merchant, so no intimidation points). Once I at down, life got easier.

My fiction is coming along nicely Like I said, I play waaaaaaay too much of these games and I think about them even more... Dreamt I was fighting the Deathkin a few weeks ago... So right now it says I am a chief admiral, do you also have a list of the commendations you can achieve so I can better work them into the story?

hlo: if you are constantly running out of rations, then you are probably trying to sail into the wind a lot. This is slow. Instead of sailing nw into the wind, sail north a lot and then west a lot. It's a longer distance but a faster one. Or possibly you just have too much non-edible cargo. Stick the things you aren't going to immediately sell in a treasure chest on an island, so you can come back and pick them up later when you hear about a nearby shortage.

Update: After much struggle I have managed to go up to Whitecliff and recruit that Galda Fenn. Being friendly enough with Kaihmer helps with the supply issue. The trip back down against wind is another matter. At times I thought I cannot make it. Ship resembles a holed out raft at times, crew went mutiny once due to lack of rations. Finally got back to The Horn. I think I have got around the typical "corner" commonly associated with these type of games, the rest should be easier.
To Officer Genious: As for your Star Traders reference, carrying artifacts into red zone is not an issue for me. In that game I have a custom built 164 crew, 105 cargo (all fuel) FAST QUICK with Weapon Cabinet (+25 weapons) with Warrior rating of 52, and a mechanical officer to fix the red zones solar sail damages underway. I constantly looking for a fight with alien so I can board it. The problem is I don't find too many Xeno at all.
