I've probably played for an hour now. I just hit "go" on the stock game so my difficulty is normal. I purposefully haven't watched the tutorial because when the game is out on the market a lot of people are just going to fire it up and try it for 10-20 minutes and if it's too complicated a lot of them are going to go look for something else.
Without the tutorial it is pretty complicated. The whole population thing has probably been the hardest to figure out. It seems pretty random and can mean all you do for some planets is build hives as fast as you can and you still often get behind. Research is also a little complicated. You open up one of the research areas and there a numerous things listed that are different colors and a "buy" button" at the button of the screen. I'm never quite sure what I'm buying. If there is an over all screen to see what determines the credits you get each turn I haven't found it. I just recently dipped way into negative credit category and I assume it has to do with having too many ships, but I"m not certain.
I've engaged the enemy right now. So far I haven't had too much problem bringing down their ships with the 2 defenders I started with, a strike fighter and a few gun ships that I built. I ran into one of their colony ships undefended and thought it would be an easy mark. Not so. Two turns with 4 ships and I couldn't bring it down before it got to a planet and colonized it. I have no idea now how to take over that planet. I've got total control of the space around it, but can't seem to do anything.
I think I will get it figured out though and if I did a little more reading of all the little text things that would help. Some way to really set apart what a building does would help. Maybe a little coins symbol instead of credits and hammers instead of CP.
