Don't ask me why, but the Xenos let my ships leave alive after I stumbled into their territory and took a failed potshot at a colonizer. When I returned several turns later with tougher ships and a tightly-organized fleet, they sat in place and let me shoot them without shooting back.
I feel a bit like I'm kicking a Xeno while they're down. Doesn't stop me from trying to kill them all though.

They attack now, but still have odd moments of staring into space... pun intended.

They attack now, but still have odd moments of staring into space... pun intended. That's a bug in the AI -- you're just outside their claimed territory and they cannot "see" you, even though you can Torp them. First, I made up the rules. Then I put the rules into code. Then I wrote more code to play the game. It isn't very good at it yet

It also gives you an option to fall back. Future Scout and Templar ships will be able to help you identify the xeno infestations, and even drive them back!

Yeah but I just used autopilot on the fighters. The second set of colonies are on the other side of a few Xenos planets. Fighters just went right through their backyards.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
