I was just thinking today... If I am a ranking knight in say the Ruesland military, why would I want to recruit only rabble sailors hired at some back bar in a fishing village or rifraff from the local tavern? I just think it would be nice to have the option to have actual soldiers on the ship, even if it were only a small regiment to help in combat or to keep the commoners in line. Just a thought, maybe you could pay for them or they would cost a monthly fee or something... You could make them available only at palaces of a certain rating, or at naval forts.

They wouldn't have to be experts at sailing operations or anything but hand to hand and cannon operations etc, so maybe pos bonuses for combat and maybe 50-60% effectiveness at sailing operations... Increased rations usages could help balance... It could also be a help for classes like merchants, a way to help defend the ship instead of putting valuable points into fencing... Wealthy merchants could that way pay for protection... They could be unavailable to the pirate class or smugglers, because no castle is going to give valuable soldiers to a pirate or one who illegally transports goods, they could also help defend you in case of a mutiny

In the British Royal Navy, these marines -- called 'Lobsters' because their uniform was red, while the regular sailor's was, well usually blue but in any case not red -- didn't do any sailing at all. But they lead the boarding actions should you ever take any. It was only usual for larger warships to have lobsters. The normal expectation was that there was going to be some fighting on land to do, and they were to do it.

I sincerely hope we get to use it someday, it allows for basic, trained, expert and soldiers.
