The fog actually reappears from time to time - especially if you exit to menu. Had this problem with HoS, but it seems more prevalent here.

slayernz - the fog resets every turn, slowly close back into darkness. That's intentional.

Can we then request a special Night Light upgrade for those captains who are afraid of the dark ...
But really, I can understand not seeing enemy movements but the stars and systems don't really disappear or move right?

Yeah, this basically means that we have to keep notes outside of the game in order to keep track of where we've seen stars or anomalies. That's tolerable, but not great on a desktop, but a pain on a mobile device. There's no way that info would be forgotten in reality.

I have to agree. In ST there is no fog because it is assumed the sector has been mapped out. If I send my Explorer out into deep space I don't wanna bring him back and lose all the space I saw. Ive noticed this can be an extreme pain on the big map. Problem being when I colonize a planet a certain distance away I lose sight of the space inbetween the planets. Also as others have said it is hard to remember exactly where things are at.

I think a good way to deal with keeping the fog of war but unable to see enemy movements unless a unit is nearby is by allowing discovered areas to be mapped out, but have a fog where there are no units. Undiscovered areas are totally black.

I like the way this was handled in HoS. The areas already explored are gray and get lighter if the party re-enters the area. But the overall map is still visible so you don't forget how to navigate from the North Vault to West Farmhold etc. Unlike HoS if you have been attacked once in an area you won't be hit again. In Space, re-entering an area you could be attacked at anytime.
Explorer ships by nature should be mapping stars and anomalies ST 4x already shows ship position on the map as x/y coordinates. Stars stay put for billions of years, enemy ships are always there and cannot be seen at long range. For example even when you have used Sly Look to light up a portion of the HoS map that tells you there might be enemies in the area but will not display them until a battle begins.
Off Topic: Somewhere down the long development plan, it might be interesting to play with the effects of a Star going Super Nova.

Oh yeah - with radiation flooding multiple sectors in all directions! Star quakes would be pretty cool too, or just a decent gamma ray burst that fries half your population ... In saying that, stars due to go super nova are pretty obvious and you wouldn't in your most desperate times ever form a colony around one. Research base maybe, but not colony. Oh oh oh ... in that case, you can get +10 RP per turn you are camped out with a science vessel, BUT the only way to redeem the accumulated RP would be to get your ship back to a friendly star dock. IF your ship is blown up because of the SN, then it's your damned fault

On some systems this could really help solve the overcrowding problem as long as the facilities remain intact. What a barbaric thought I'm almost ashamed of myself. I like your idea of a ship camping out for extra RP, seems like an excellent enhancement for Explorer ships. Remember that slightly cheesy Disney production called the "Black Hole", ok I admit enjoying it, watched it twice.

I didn't see it as a kid although I had a story book of the movie. I finally watched it a year ago and it didn't have as much impact for me as it would otherwise <grin>

Fog is a fine and traditional thing, but stars and nebulae should be visible after the fog closes. Unless there are plans to make the stars move.
