I am curious about her...
Before, I get a job and complete it. The side I worked for goes up in rep, the other side it was against goes down.
But with her, I keep getting toasts about my targets being not independents but some other faction.. And I may be wrong, but it seems taking contracts on independents is making other factions mad since the.political officer reveals who I really was fighting instead of independents..
Or am I just crazy? I worry if she isn't really worth having on board...

I have gotten toasts after jobs i thought were against indies, then she pipes up sayin it was so n so in disguise then i get toasted on an 'oath of alliance violation, rep lost. Was thinkin about makin a thread, but now i don't hafta. u'd think she'd warn u b4 job completion so u could abort mission if u dont wanna risk rep

It's not just that, but I am not sure I ever lost rep with anyone when I didn't have her. So she was more trouble than good. Unless I did lose rep, but I don't think I did. An official answer on her would be nice. Not to mention her telling you before you attempt the mission.

The rep losses were still there, you were just unaware of it without her. Her purpose is to warn you before you do something you may regret. Depending on the type of captain you're playing, she's very useful. Pirates and the like, however, probably don't have much use for her. I'd say Military, Smuggler, and perhaps merchants get the most out of her, or perhaps regular captains and Star Traders.

I admit the trade thing helps. I generally check beforehand anyhow, since I want to know where the trade alliances are, but it's nice.
Choosing her over another officer is tough though.
Mechanic: Yes. Soldier : HELLS yes Scout: Yes half the time.
Spy: Looks good, not had much of a chance to use yet. First mate: Eh... Political officer: Only if I don't have someone else already.
It WOULD help if she told you about things BEFORE you took the contract, or at least before you finished it....

Scout: Most useful to Explorer captains. Spy: I haven't really needed one yet, but I assume most useful to Smugglers and Spy captains. First Mate: He's actually useful if morale is a pain in the ass for you. Otherwise, I ditch him as soon as I find a new officer.
For the way I play, Mechanic and Military officers are a must. Mechanic is a must no matter what you play as, but the Military officer is definitely needed if you plan to be aggressive in any way.
The Political officer comes in handy if you're also trying to be friendly with everyone. Something else I had forgotten to mention.

On a semi related note about rep and trade: does anyone know why sometimes records give positive rep and other times they don't?

gearheadwhat - check the conflicts, there are probably spy wars occurring.

I imagine then that spy wars increase the number of 'false' operatives sent out?
Also, I've recently unlocked the smuggler officer.. But I've never ran into one. What does he do exactly, and what kind of stuff gives him bonuses? (And how do I find him, which rumors, etc?)
