You should be using it to do political maneuvers via the Team Summary screen. The best thing to do is once you have $200 credits to spare, start a Trade Summit (etc). If successful, while it lasts, it will boost your economy.
As the factions grow in strength and confidence, there will be conflicts & rumors. You can use politics to defeat them or change them. You can use them to get different focuses for the empire as a whole.

Okay, but what is its quantitative effect on a trade summit for example?

Ah, I see. For some reason I thought they were separate stats. Bad UI probably. Will try to fix that. Next update will help better quantify all Conflicts.

For example, you get this type of information in your Library:
* Spy Wars increase Colony Maintenance by 20%. * Spy Wars increase RP by +2 per Colony. * Spy Wars decrease Income generated by Population by $2 per Population per Turn.

Tech Tree Faction Politics 1
Trade Embargo "negotiate a lasting treaty" 80% Chance to succeed. Trade Alliance "negotiate a lasting treaty" 40% chance to succeed.
Trade Embargo sounds a little ominous. Does it cause any negative effects? Trade Alliance is the next one down the tree with less chance to succeed, one must be better than the other right? Does embargo stimulate syndicate tensions?
