For instance it says Rusland Mages use Stone (if I remember correctly) just wondering about future implementation of these magicks. They would also be interesting to work into my story if I could.

I can't find where Cory said it, but Magic cannot be used over water. This is one reason why seafarers and mages are so distrustful of each other. Mages and their magic are the biggest factor in the land based industrial revolution, but sea travel is the lifeblood of the world's trade and warfare because of the speed and carrying ability. Most of that is from Cory and flavor text. The magic itself though , Nathaniel Sveet's story had an example of Ruseland mages using their unique stone magic to preserve a person. Kaimar practices fire magic to run forges (manual). Cadari have wood magic. (?)Not sure about applications there. Hope this helped and you get information for your story.

This is the heart of it - great post. Also, Magicians and their practice require a lot of Gold. It is one of the reasons it is so valuable, also see Sveet story. Gold is known to attract Kraken. Most Magicians get violently ill when they step on a boat. Magic is land based, and used by the empires to drive their economy - empowering forges, driving timber woodlands to grow, guiding miners.

So stone magic is like kind of a sixth sense about the earth and precious metals? Cool. Ah, that's what wood magic is. No wonder they have such a large navy, the must build ships like crazy.

Thanks everyone! Looks like magic wont be played with in this story, perhaps in the tale I have in my head about a certain smuggler. We shall see.

I didn't know any of this- very interesting and not at all what I expected magic to be like!! Good stuff you got there.

@officergenius thank you. And thank Cory and Andrew for making their worlds as engaging to learn about as they are to play in

Each of the major Nations has a particular school of Magic.
Each of them requires Gold (in some form) for their magic to work.
Each school has different abilities and attributes.
All magic fails over the sea -- and mages get very sick when taking long sea voyages, sometimes they even die.
If this weakness is due to the power of the Kraken, Ice Demon or a natural phenomenon is argued by the mages constantly.
The Ice Demon, who rule the frozen seas during the decades of winter hate human mages and seek to kill them.
Ice Demon cannot travel across the land (or they die quickly if they do, another argued point.)
Kraken can cross land but not for long periods and usually only wild areas suffer these attacks.
Kraken are voraciously hungry for gold and will consume it like crazy.
