All of you guys talking about going for hab 3 etc before ships must be a lot luckier than I have been. I'm on my third game and the AI always starts out in my back yard. I just wish there was a lower tech way to do something to their planets. I think I might win the game I'm playing now, the only 2 or higher buildings I have right now are hab and exchange both at 2. I had to rush to planetary invasion and I've almost got it. In the mean time I just have patrols of ships flying around the AIs planets about 5 or so in total, blasting every ship they make as soon as they make it. Finding them early and taking out their ships as quickly as they make them is the only way I've found to survive so far. Granted I haven't played on a larger than 64x64 map yet. I just really wish there was something I could do to their planets at a lower tech level. I'd be fine blasting them to ash to give myself a little breathing room.

miedeth - I'd really suggest getting the latest update and trying the tutorial map.

I did and while my economy ended up better, the computer rolled over the top of me. Guess I need more practice before I can handle normal difficulty. Next game I'll try easy and see if I can manage to not die.

miedeth - thanks for sharing! Were you using your own ship designs? Did they roll over you due to volume of enemies or for another reason?

I am on my 4th Easy game and only now feel like I will probably win it. There is so much to learn, this game is huge!
I am surprised at the number of people posting who are playing Normal or harder and complaining about the difficulty. That is why there is an Easy mode!

I was using a mix of your ship designs and mine. The default fighter does good early on, the default cruiser I've found is pretty useless unless it's operating in my own space. It's always numbers, I've found if I'm pretty aggressive I can hold them back for a time. My own designs hold up better than the standard ones once I have the tech to make good ones, but of course those cost more. In the end it's sheer numbers of aliens that overwhelm me. That and their world killer ships seem to kill population and quality every hit, where mine our a roll of the dice whether they do or not.
I think more information in the tutorial about keeping maintenance costs down. Elsewhere on the forums I see people talking about keeping costs down to 80% being ideal, but I've found I have a hard time keeping them at 100%. This last game I had an average moral of 9 but a maintenance cost of 115%. More information or help on that in game would be awesome.

@jr8825 - depends on the Quality / Population ratio. It can definitely be a way to preserve a planet and not go over-Quality.
