Ok. So this is a fun game.
I like playing almost all the classes. The star trader is nice, but I don't know how much his purchasing power is really worth over the spies abilities for example. I like them because their skills make starting out easier.
Now, to the point. Playing either of them I rank up warrior. I also carry weapons and a military officer. But when I board someone of equal or lower level, I still routinely die.
In one hit. Everything to the hull, bypassing everything else. I don't get it. I am only on demanding, but getting through the early teens in levels seems like a very high hurdle. If I don't take warrior skills and an officer at least, I only get boarded and killed more often.
How do you guys not get one-shotted? I was in a Zendu cutter if it makes a difference. I just get befuddled every time this happens. I was able to take out a space hulk though just a bit earlier though. So that was fun.
But ya, any tips for not dying in one go?

How many crew do you have in these encounters?

Wouldnt uping stealth n pilot help evade incomming weapon shots? I get one shotted rarely. I always keep explorer, tactics, pilot n stealth on evenish terms. I nearly always play explorer, smuggler or star trader.

One shot deaths are actually more commonly attributed to the enemy ship ramming yours rather than enemy weapons fire. I've seen 22 points of hull + 11 points of armor get wiped out in a single turn (of course, resulting in my captain suddenly expanding like a puffer fish because of vacuum ...)
I'd like Pilot skill helping to negate ramming actions - higher pilot = higher chance of avoiding ram.

I think my last ship had 80 crew.
I think I had in the ballpark of 10-20 weapons.
I had warrior at 10 or 11, along with the military officer. I was about level ten, with pilot and quickness both being 12 I think. It's generally early in the game it happens.
I fly up, hit board. Then it shows both ships side by side. And mine explodes from max everything, to 0 hull (no other damage).
Honestly it's frustrating. Generally I try to at least shoot the decks once before I board (since cory mentioned something about it somewhere lowering their morale/efficiency).

I've lost a captain at rank 30+ to ramming on Demanding level. If I hadn't just done a purge of by old captains, I'd have been able to share more details. Apparently if your captain reputation (not faction reputation) is particularly negative, then enemy captains are more willing to ram because they don't see any benefit in surrendering gracefully ... ... not that I've seen any ship surrender without having their engines blown out. Now that could be a nice option in the game. If you are, say level 30 and you come across a lowly level 10 merchant, you should be able to invite them to surrender without needing to shoot them all to pieces. That's me - hunting for the diplomatic way to steal from a ship

gearheadwhat -- "I fly up, hit board. Then it shows both ships side by side. And mine explodes from max everything, to 0 hull (no other damage)." Does not sound like the way I am trying to make it work. Are these ships twice your size?
