If I turn up at a planet that has an officer at it, but I already have 3 officers, the Officer button is greyed-out, as though they are not there. If I dismiss one of my existing Officers, I seem to have to leave the planet, and return, before they notice I have a spare cabin for them.
Would it be possible to have the Button light up, and if you try to recruit them, it says "You do not have room for a 4th Officer - who would you like to leave behind?"
I often pick up short-term officers early on, especially if they are cheap, and then want to swap them for one that better suits my style of play. When I hear a rumour of an Officer, I sometimes arrive too late, but if I have 3 already, I don't know whether I am late or not without dismissing an existing one!

The main bugbear (for me, at least!) is not knowing if there is an officer available to recruit, if I already have 3.

Ah, ok! I hadn't noticed that. I thought it was like e.g. Promotions, where the button is always there, but disabled when you don't qualify. An easier Officer-swap would be a nice touch, but you've solved my main issue! Thanks again!

I have just started a new game, and on every planet, the Palace has the Officer button showing, although it is disabled. I only have the starting First Mate Officer, so have room to recruit more.

What OS and device are you using? Cannot replicate on any Androids and I know that isn't possible on iOS (since the buttons never disable.) If you could post a screenshot, maybe I can explain what button you're seeing? I don't see any way for that to happen in the code, and it doesn't happen in my game (and no one else has ever reported it.)

In Wild Zones, the Officer button works as you describe, it is in The Palace that it is always visible

Ah, from the change log that was requested by 6 different users, so the UI was adjusted to make them happy many months ago and I forgot that Palace and Wild Zones work differently.
We may be in a "no fix possible" situation, unfortunately. Too many promises made to different people I guess.

This only happened one time, but I was at a planet to verify the rumor was still active (it was old), dismissed an officer, left the planet to re-enter. But somewhere during the takeoff/landing, the rumor expired and the officer was no longer available. I was super pissed, LOL~

Perhaps if you have 3 officers already, you can hit the 'officer' button and then simply get a popup 'You have three officers already. You will need to dismiss one to hire the one on site.' And then either a 'yes/no' to dismiss a current one (listing what they are) or just list all 3 with a choice to dismiss one
