I was wondering if there might be an option for splitting off a prize crew (standard number of crewmen based upon the ship size - small ships 5, med -20, etc) to take ships captured in combat back to the nearest planet of the faction you represent to put them in dry dock. I hate it when I see a good ship I wouldn't mind keeping but don't want to give up my customized ship just to sail a wreck to the nearest star port.
I know the option is bypassed by the "scrap metal" payment. Maybe you could balance it out by requiring one of the ship's officers to take charge of the prize crew. Now that I think of it it would be cool to be able to store officers on ships in dry dock. It should cost a ton of money for game balance though.
Anyway, I know in the old British Navy prize crews were used often and it was a way for sailors to actually earn some good money beyond their meager pay. Surely our space sailors deserve the same opportunity to retire to the Old Salt's Rest Home for Aged and Infirm Mariners.

This has been brought up several times before. Im not really sure if it will happen or not, but there is a lot of support for it.

A forum search will bring up several threads.
Game balance, world design and philosophical obstacles make it a tough sell.
There are also several strategies that allow a Captain to use Rank Ships to create "prize ships" that can be abandoned for Faction Salvage after a capture.
If anyone cares to read the threads you'll find me talking about the cultural difference between a Grav Crew member and the Spacing Captain -- How the cultural meaning of Captain has taken on legal, social and religious meaning to the people of Star Traders and the even comparing ST RPG to age of sail.
Anyway, this is on the list but like I said there are a LOT of obstacles to reconcile.

-_- what is this "search" and "read" stuff you mention? New captains abilities I am sure, only for elite players though.

As I experience more of the game I am really appreciating the amount of thought that went into the lore, design, and balance. You've created a rich universe here. I'm just proud to blow up small parts of it every time I play.
