It seems the stock ships' designs are stuck regardless of what we have researched in the game. Will it be possible to have upgrade versions available automatically when new technologies are researched?
I know I can design my own but all those Next/Prev tabs are driving me nuts as I usually play these games on my Android phone while commuting. The people that like to design their own will do so regardless. Having multiple editions of the (eg.) Wolf Cruiser will be fine, may be add the I, II, III, IV, etc to distinguish them. I think doing so will encourage the more average players to get more enjoyment out of the game quickly.

I've also been a bit disappointed to see that there were no new ships available with my new technologies ; after that, I discovered that I could make my own ship designs, so it's fine, but "standard" ship plans with new technologies in it, like hlo suggested could be interesting. I also wondered why the ships already build could not be upgraded ; for example, if they were in green sectors, I don't see why there would be no way to change its weaponry or reactors during a turn. The ship would be unusable during the upgrade and it would cost some money, quite a lot in fact, but my good old Wolf Cruisers would become more powerful with the time without having to be destroyed and replaced. I tend to take a good care of my ships and I find myself disadvantaged because of it ; I can easily adapt, but I thought it would always be good to suggest something like that here.

If I remember right, one of the TB said that the lore invalidates changing a ship post-construction. I do agree with giving us new 'Stock Ships' as new techs are researched, however. I hate having to design a whole new ship just to change the reactor.

lazarus If lore invalidates changing a ship's equipment after construction, why would we be able to upgrade it in Star Traders RPG ? =/

Bohrson - you'll notice the many of updates in ST RPG do not allow you to replace them. Also, consider that those are only Upgrade replacement, where the request is to change systems like Torpedos, Weapons, Armor, Hull, etc. Ever seen those changes in ST RPG?

You guys can always build ships from scratch or modify existing stock ships using new tech

fallen Actually... you're right. Sorry about that, I'm not used enough to ST lore yet. I guess I'm just gonna let my good old fighters get scraped by Xeno Mass Drivers while building Next Gen Ships on my factory worlds then. I'm still discovering the game mechanics at this point.

Also remember, destroying your own ships will let you salvage some money. I'm not sure what exactly determines how much money you make (might be affected by HP or maybe politics), but I've sold ships before for way more than what they were originally worth.

Think of it this way: adding to a ship is okay, but replacing a part is not. Although ST4X doesn't allow us to add parts either, that is probably due to game engine limitations. It could also be something they plan on adding in a future update. Also, as squee said, selling your old ships will help raise the money for the upgraded versions.

lazarus - don't you think being able to add to a single ship whatever item you want would cause a very confusing proliferation of one-off designs? I think my fleet would be a big mess, as all my "Vangauard Cruiser MK2" would be different.

I knew you'd have a better explanation, fallen.
