Troop upgrades - what fo they do?

I'm finally in a position to start invading my first Xeno planets. I want to make a good and efficient assault transport to capture a planet. I assume that the troop upgrades add to the invasion effct, but I have no idea how that works. The library doesn't reveal anything about invasions either, so no help for me from there either.

I currently can choose between light mechanized birgades, heavy mech and assault marines. What do these upgrades do?
