Was looking at designing some custom ships and noticed that certain abilities aren't available unless you include some upgrades.
Posted about how to make a Fuel Tanker you needed to have the fighter maintenence bay installed...seems that a number of different ship types require an upgrade unrelated to their desired role to get the specialized ability.
So want to build a new exo scout ship? You have to select one of the second group of upgrade options to get explore in third training slot.
There are a few others I'm sure that require some sort of upgrade from second group before you can select the training.
Makes it difficult to design ships, especially if your looking at either keeping them on a budget or in creating a maximum efficiency design.
The fact that it's not documented just makes it harder to design as you have to search out why something isn't working/available.

xdesperado - can you share the specifics of the case you think is going on with the Explorer? "From the second group"?

xdesperado - can you share the specifics of the case you think is going on with the Explorer? "From the second group"? will try... First I can't just select design, then new, then a basic ship type. Instead I have to edit a pre-existing design, no big deal but a bit awkward. So I'll edit the existing Solar Exo Scout ship. Not overly concerned with costs so... First change level to 3 so I don't have to change ship and pilot settings when I upgrade reactor. Now I upgrade to Fast reactor 5, gives me 2AP/4MP and the 3 Fuel per turn still provides decent range. Because I switched to level 3 I don't need to change the Ship and Captain settings. Want a bit more firepower to help discourage pesky Xenos so give it a VM Whirlwind Mark III. Switch to Reinforced Duranium Cladding for better evasion and stealth. Now we're at the upgrade screen, since this is intended primarily as an exploration ship with only limited combat potential I give the top upgrade button a pass...no problems so far. Here's the thing though I have to pick one of the options from lower upgrade button or I don't get option to choose explore with 3rd training button. So looking at options I pick Trained Crew for a little added range. On to training screen. Top button I choose Gun Barrage burns no W-F so even on long patrols ship can still fight back and with 2 attacks a turn has a chance to let the Xeno know they aren't just tasty snacks. Second training button I could select another attack option but this is a scout so take Sector Scan 3...hard on the W-F but the range should help make up for it. Third training button, if I hadn't chosen the Trained Crew or another upgrade off the lower upgrade button on previous screen I would only get the 3 sector scans as options here but because I did take an upgrade I can select Explore. As a side note any Fighter class ship that chooses one of the upgrade options from that lower button can take the Explore training from 3rd training button.

To explore, you need a crew upgrade on the fighter. I think the only way to notice is that it actually says "Exploration and EVA" on the upgrade, which really is not clear enough. I have no idea what EVA is though.
As you noticed, you need fighter bays to repair and to refuel for carriers.
These are the only two upgrades so far that affect your training options.
Also, if you have both auxiliary upgrade slots full, you will not be able to use Sector Scan. Since no one else has made any comments about this, this might be a bug on my device and everyone else is thinking I'm crazy.
