Does any of y'all know what the lines are where a rival nation will no longer talk to you? I have seen that it's possible to earn pardons for some level of infraction, but at some point it seems like no audience is possible (even from the capital?)
In the rush to get to 48 completed commissions in under 10 years (without rejecting anyone) it's possible to really piss off a few different folks (because you can't pick and choose commissions)... Ergo, what do I do after that? Just get stuck with the one nation that likes me because I did their bidding and didn't sail for years across the seas to mix it up (and fail the time limit)? Unless, there's a way to get it back via pardon...

You can take commissions for any nation, even if they hate you. I once raised my Cadari reputation from -68 to -20 this way, and after that I was able to pay for pardon at the castle. I'm not sure but I think they'll let you into Castle if you have -20 rep or more.

I'm also a fan of buying the pardon as soon as I turn in the mission. Much cheaper that way, as basic pardons for less than 5 negative rep arerelatively inexpensive. Harder to do when you take commissions against the trading companies, as they don't have pardons, but the established nations this works fairly well for.
You can also join in on the sides of the different political issues at hand. After the damage is done to your reputation, figure out which factions you can salvage a relationship with, then work tirelessly to make amends the best you can. Unless they're Federation. Then they get burned alive and sent to the Krakken below. #&@/$&@&%%@ Kaihmer, gutless sons of the filthiest whores, all of them.

Hmm... If I'm trying to get 48 successful commissions without too many reject/fail/expires, then I'm pretty much at the winds of fate when it comes to rep (if I'm in one corner of the world dominated by one particular nation). When I finished grinding, I was pretty-far set back with my Cadari rep. So I thought I'd try to whittle it back to zero or at least to a range where I could get a pardon. But here's my problem. ...So I take 3 commissions from a bar in a Cadari city (only place I'm allowed into)... successfully complete all of them. My rep improves by (3). I go on to a Cadari city to get some more. On the way, just to get into the Cadari city, I have to click through 5-6 ships worth of "avoid/retreat" before I can even get into the town... But, once I do, I find out that even just a chance meeting with a Cadari ship that I "avoid" has caused me to lose reputation-- to the point that I was 2 points WORSE off than I was before I even started my commissions. Is it supposed to be that impossible to restore myself to these lands..? I fear that I won't be able to even visit half the map if I'm not allowed to repair my ship (the islands only seem to work if my stats are very low, and only then to move them up to pretty low) It seems it might be quicker/easier to grind 100silver per negative rep point than it is to do it the way I've been trying it... Ideas..?

salamano - Reputation is not something that is easily to repair. You are a Captain hated by the Cadari. You're Reputation will also settle over time, but they don't forget eaisly.

Sometimes you just have to accept the negative rep for a while. Luck plays a big role in which nation hates you after your commission blitz. Nations don't soon forget the wrongs done to them, and that's one more reason to always buy the pardon as soon as you can... Pardons get extremely expensive the further in debt you get... Even if you break even while you work on the commissions, you end up winning out in the end.

There's so much you can do about the major nations and trading parties, but precious little you can do with the Buccaneers (for example), and yet they have towns all over the map. You can *never know if they're the ones involved in a commission until after you accept it -- and even then those are rare... And, as far as rumors go, I wish there was a more accurate way of covering them, but alas, they're called "Rumors".
Case in point:
I have spend the last FIVE "pirate years" trying to improve Buccaneer rep, because I'm just at -11 and need only a little to get back into graces enough to repair at the docks. Only two times in that span of constant rumor-farming have I come across a shortage at a Buccaneer town that I had the potential of up-repping by solving. However, when I finally make the voyage through the horse-latitudes and my near-mutinous crew arrives at 2,6 from 1,1 ... There's not a single sign of the shortage in town. Wasted time. Makes me wonder what I'm even doing. Unfortunately, there's no way of seeing the other side of the world without places to repair and stock up. Going for those timed commission award locks really leave you in a reprobative hole. I guess there's always paying more to unlock everything manually.
Has anyone ever gone for the commission blitz on 'hard' (when not a patron of the Caldari), and successfully obtained the big one while also being able to get the pardons in between?

I have, with Ruesland, though I think things were easier when I did so. And I started everything as an accomplished ice demon hunter, so everybody loved me. Well, before that I was an accomplished merchant, so I was also rich.

It's hard to recover from low Buccaneers reputation. But I don't have any problems if they hate me. I usually try to keep high reputation of three nations: Ruesland, Cadari, Kaihmer. This way I can repair my ship and buy provisions almost everywhere, except [1,5] and [2,6], though I sail there only once to chart islands.
Low Buccaneers reputation isn't a problem for me.

Yeah... It might be a hill too high for me to climb again... I already took one pirate out to get the main commission unlock, and after thinking I got it, later discovered that the text didn't inform me even a passive decline was also akin to 'fail'... Then I started another pirate, got the commission goal again, but this time didn't realize the 'permadeath' exclusion. So now I'd essentially have to do it a third time. Or I guess buy all the unlocks. Harumph.

Be careful with "Master Adventurer", "Great Adventurer" and "Elite Adventurer" too. As of version 1.2.9, descriptions of these awards say nothing about rejected jobs, but in fact you won't receive these awards if you rejected a lot of commissions (see here).
