I would love the idea of lingering encounters. Something like:
Year 1: Find a man on a piece of wood floating. Nurture him back to health/kill him/ignore.
Year 2: if nurture: he states his desire to go to his home port where he can reward you. If kill, bounty hunters appear to finish the job that you did...
Something around those lines.

abysmal - there will be encounters soon that offer you a job to take that man to his home port.

We have a man floating? Sweet... now to ignore him as I only have enough biscuits to last 1 day with 2 crew.

abysmal - finding a survivor at a wreckage is an encounter I plan to add in the next release or so.

Holy ship abuse, Batman! Roderick just went from a decent treasure hoard down to under 200sp... Time to rethink those attribute points, boys and girls- the ocean just got real!

I'd love advice on balancing as well.

Haven't played enough to give advice on balancing yet, but I can relate what happened in my first 20 minutes with the new encounter system Soon-to-be Admiral Roderick is very new and playing on Challenging. Currently level four, and when I started playing last night I had 600+sp in the hold, and off to a comfortable start. By the time I was finished, I had gotten as low as 90sp but completed two commissions and got back to 200sp. In those 20 minutes, the new encounter system cost me 15+ mast repairs, 5-6 torn sails, the lives of 6 men and subsequently days worth of burials at sea, 12+ lost morale that I have been able to recover back to 8. The CK style breathes a breath of fresh air into the game, no doubt, but makes for a much steeper challenge. Granted my captain is still very new, and therefore doesn't have the skills yet to fully deal with these encounters. Perhaps the damage done to masts should be dialed back slightly, depending on difficulty/level of ship/sailing skill of captain etc, just to keep the cost somewhat balanced for new captains. It seemed that this was the most prevalent encounter, and each time it came up I failed the roll, losing 2 masts each time. The other issues I can deal with (Kraken morale loss, damage to sails, brawls on deck) and scavenging wrecks isn't a forte of knights, but it's a chance to get something- makes it worth it! I guess it's just a frequency issue with the mast encounter that made these encounters a silver-sink. Hope any of this helps!

En1gma - absolutely! Great feedback. There is a lot of work to keep it moving forward (making them more update-aware, balancing for lower difficulties, rumor-aware, deep-water and shallow water aware, high / low morale & ration aware, and raising the count of encounters up by 10x to 60 instead of 6). Hopefully quite soon, the mix will be more of a bag of trouble, middle-ground stuff, and good things. I really appreciate sharing the experience! Sounds like we better tone it back quickly or Captains will be in big trouble on the high seas.
