I know that there's the "Total War" footing that rival nations/trade groups can have... but perhaps it can be spiced up a bit with the advent of actual war...
-- Cities changing hands
-- Armadas wandering around (that you can be caught in the middle of)
I've been a little depressed that all my Gao Confederation rep (for one example) will go for naught because there's not a single city in the land that the nation controls. It might be neat to imply that all these nations have limitless off-board resources so that no one place could eventually take over the whole thing, etc. etc. Seeing cities change (or even helping it to happen through missions/battles) could be kind of interesting.
