Sorry if this doesn't fit here; couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. I think that how you name your ship designs is important, because it reminds you of what that class of ships is for. It's also a fun way to put your own individual spin on the game. So far I have named my enhanced replacement designs thus: - Seljuk Fighter, for the renowned Turkic light cavalry. This emphasizes the hit-and-run nature of basic fighters.
- Homesteader Colony Ship, for obvious reasons. I think I'll make things more interesting by calling them "Atlantis" in further games.
- Fenriswolf Cruiser, to underscore the tough and mean nature of cruisers more than "Wolf" alone would.
- Extender Carrier, after the tanker aircraft. I don't have a variant that does repairs because I find repair much less urgent than fueling, at least so far.
- Peste Noire Assault Fighter, French for "black plague", for how these craft "infect" enemy ships.
- Pathfinder Solar Exo-Scout, for obvious reasons again. These are the only craft I have with the Sector Scan and Explore capabilities.
- Testudo Military Transport, after the Roman military formation, which means "tortoise". I wanted to make sure my military transports could take a real beating while purging Xeno worlds. Based on reenactments I've seen in videos, formations similar to the testudo were used for sapping fortresses, so it fits well.

I tend to vary the names from game to game but, like you, I try to go for ones that are appropriate to the role of the ship:
Fighter - Hornet, Snipe, Swallow - All fast and, in the case of the Hornet, painful. Cruiser - My torpedo cruisers are Longbows at the moment, for fairly obvious reasons. Tanker - Space Cow! - They feed my other ships with their delicious WF milk. Repair Ship - Nurse Shark - They nurse my fighters back to health. Colony Ship - I don't bother giving these a different name. Transport - Buzzard - They're quite large and fly around things that are about to die. Assault Fighter - Lamprey - They latch on and chew their way through their prey.
I've taken to given each individual ship a name, too, ranging from the Sea Cow class tanker, "Vache", to the Swallow class fighter, "Pointy Stick". It helps me get a bit more invested in the individual ships, rather than just sending another Snipe class fighter to it's doom, it's the "Timely Intervention", an early model Snipe and veteran of many patrols and skirmishes.

I have only played a few smaller games so i never have more than a dozen fighting ships at a time, so I name each "class" of ships and then give them individual names as they are built. I like the individuality of knowing each ship
"Phalanx" class had ancient Greek names. Ulysses, Herecles, Jason, Menelaus, hector, Achilles. The ship that had the most kills was, fittingly, Alexander the Great
"Last stand" were in a war I expected to lose were named for fighters who died in victory. Leonides, Nelson, Samson, Bruce Lee
"Battlefront" are named for locations of battles. Gettysburg, iwo jima, Hastings, Thermopylae, Trafalgar, Bunker Hill
I don't individually name support ships, except once when my fighters were named after boxers and my carriers were Don King and Mickey.

Having finally researched heavy carriers I've named the tanker variant "Queen of Cows", with the first ship of that class being named "Milk Beast"

It is Dependant upon the name I choose to use when I am playing.....
One game I started referencing Mercedes Lackey and renamed all of the planets as cities from her Valdemarbooks... And all of the ships ended up getting named after characters in those books..
This play through I have based everything on a subtype of a faction of units and places from a game that I used to play but no longer do. So in thisplay through all of my Cadar planets are Crest Military *location*, whereas the ships are named after units or characters found in the stories for the locations.
The game I'm running on my phone (since I play on my tablet and phone... Oh... if only one could share the save file between multiple devices....) I am naming my planets after science fiction writers and ships for those individual factions (Devaltos, Rychat, Steel Song) after characters from their books.
Its fun ;>

I am a big fan of naming my ships, usually what I'll do is something like this.
Come up with a suitable "class" name for a family of ships. Usually this will be some kind of thematic thing, for instance I usually assign my evasion-skilled fighters to birds of prey.
Then, within the class, there is one prototype name, that's just the standard class name. After that, each ship of the same class gets renamed to something that fits into the class theme.
For example, I'll name my evasion-skilled fighter "Peregrine" and the first fighter off the line keeps that name. After that, the second fighter will be renamed to "Kestrel," the third will be "Harrier," the fourth will be "Sparrowhawk," and so on.
My brawling-skilled cruisers are usually named for virtues of strength, like "Honor," "Integrity," "Fortitude," etc.
I usually name at least one of my bigger, badder ships after famous native Americans. Nothing is cooler than a "Crazy Horse" class cruiser blasting away with its gravity driver.
Is my naming scheme labor intensive? Sure it is. However, it adds a ton of personality to my ships. Each ship is immediately recognizable from its name, and sometimes the unlikeliest of names will keep kicking butt.
My last serious 4X game I had a mid-tech fighter last me all the way to the end, it was the "Chickenhawk." haha.
*edit* forgot to mention that I'll usually set a certain number of kills, usually 5, and any ship that gets that many kills will have its name carried over to the latest class if/when it's knocked out. If a ship goes down before getting that many kills, it's name is stricken from the record. Death before dishonor, men!

For the longest time I relied solely on cruisers and they would normally only be designed for one type of combat. As they got upgraded weaponry, they would get a mk II, mk IV etc. So my whole fleet consisted of Gunny mk Xs and Torpy mk Xs. I did get really creative with my invasion ships and they were all Space Invader mk Xs.
