There are some deep sea encounters like fishing or looting which give you some goods (rations, canvas etc.). These goods are taken to the ship automatically, even if there's not enough free cargo space. As a result, cargo space is exceeded: I think there should be a generic "trade" screen, like when taking goods from defeated ship or from expedition on island. It prevents you from exceeding cargo space, and lets you decide what goods take and what leave. AoP 1.2.3 Elite (GPlay)

Very good catch on this bug, something we definitely missed.
I've logged a bug with your suggestions and will try to get it fixed for the next update.

Ticket #2720 AoP - Bug - Encounters Ignore Cargo Limits Fixed in next. I'm afraid it's still broken in 1.2.11. I've just recovered 1 unit of Canvas from wreckage despite I had no free cargo space. Now my cargo is 73/72: AoP 1.2.11 Elite (GPlay) Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
