Is there any particular advantage of equipping ship with Whaleboats? Or it's just a nice name and nothing more?
In general: are there any practical differences in combat between different types of crew weapons, like axes, short guns and so on?

Recall that I haven't played the game for a while, but when I was, I found that a boarding crew with whaleboats took less damage when they
went to board an enemy ship. But equipping the crew with the fortified forecastle meant that your enemies took more damage when they tried to board you. Muskets worked better than swords for defence, as well.

Whaleboats give a significant numerical advantage when boarding.
