Why is it that Tam can't shoot her bow and KJ can't cast his FB at an enemy standing next to them, but enemy bowmen and casters have no problem with this? This doesn't seem fair... I understand that there is a lot about how enemies move/attack that is very different from what we get to do as players (not the least of which is that all of our characters with ranged attacks also have a melee option, but bowrats only have bows), but I think it could add a new and interesting strategic layer if enemies with ranged attacks were given a penalty (-accuracy, perhaps) when they attack a character at range 1. It would open up additional viable positioning possibilities during battles and would, perhaps, help relieve the sting a bit when I see that archer shooting at me from the next square over.

Thanks for the feedback. It's been discussed before the boards a few times. This is a big part of the balancing with the AI, and I don't think we want to change it. Generally, they'd just use a move point to step back and shoot you. It would cause a very annoying pattern in the AI. I've been happy with this setup since the game's release and don't think it's something I'd want to see changed.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that the bowman constantly taking one step back would definitely be annoying. That's why I didn't suggest that they stop being allowed to shoot from 1 range, but rather that they get assessed a penalty. I just like the idea that it would open up additional positioning opportunities during combat.

Thanks for the feedback. From a balance and game play perspective the rules work best the way they are currently structured.
It's not symmetrical and some people have been confused by it in the past, but it provides the most fair system for combat and the balancing between monsters stats, player level, dungeon level, monster level and difficulty level.
Even if pre-alpha experimentation had shown that a penalty was an overall improvement (which, notably, it didn't) it would be difficult to calculate a fair penalty scalar that would work consistently across all 8,100 or so ruleset combinations.

Understood. Thanks for the explanation. Between answering all these wish list items, troubleshooting people that are having technical problems, and, overall, just being so present on these forums, how on Earth do you guys have time to get so much real work done?? You must live in an alternate universe that has 36 hours in the day...

You must live in an alternate universe that has 36 hours in the day... I love my job and don't sleep much. I type forum responses with one hand while testing games on my phone. I feel really blessed to have a chance to work as a game developer, and for as long as it lasts, I will do everything in my power to stay afloat. Sometimes that means finding ways to squeeze extra hours out of the day, but I promise, I'm not violating any laws of space time.
