Wouldn't it be cool if there were a couple of types of guns tech that you could upgrade your ship to under the Weapons upgrades section? I'd seriously consider upgrading my guns to Disruptors - guns designed to disrupt/damage ship systems without causing significant damage to the ship itself. This tech would be perfect for most players because they want to loot, or capture the ship, and there is nothing worse than seeing your new potential Jango go down with zero hull. Using Disruptors and targeting engines will have a % increase chance of causing engine damage, without causing hull damage. Targeting decks would have an increased % chance of taking out life-support in the deck sections without causing hull damage.
Drawbacks? The guns would be even less effective than normal guns at medium/long range. The gun repairs would be more expensive, less available (or both).

Remember - if you can buy it, so can the opposition.
I think certain kinds of Upgrades should give resistance or immunity to these disruptors. Battleship/Battlecruiser architecture should reduce effectiveness (by half?). Dreadnaught armor should do even better. The hinky "old technology" armor (I forget it's name; Hyperion?) should totally stop these.
