I had gotten a couple of rings that do SP drain and it took me awhile to figure out what that actually means. The more important thing is that it returns SP to your players when they have it equipped. So with Vincent sporting Lightening Spear Level 10 and Eye of the Storm 4 or 5 I thought, this might really be profitable when he's up against a large crowd. I've seen him do over 1000 damage in a single cast. That would return more SP than he spends to cast. Unfortunately a few test casts show that he's not recuping SP at the levels he should. The ring gives 3% SP drain. A few casts that did over 500 cumulative damage and he only got back 2 and 3 SP, when it should have been around 15.
So I'm wondering if something is broken or there are mechanics I'm not seeing. Is it 3%, or does that really mean "up to 3%." Is it only based on one type of damage (physical?). Is there something else going on?
Edit: Thought of one more thing, could it be calculating only the damage done to the first, targeted mob in an AoE attack?

SP Drain does a % of the damage done to the primary target. It does not take into account all AOE damage.

It takes into account Criticals and Elemental Damage (from Buffs, Gear, etc) for your SP drain as well.

Thanks for the clarification. I think he'll keep the Bone Finger ring on. Any chance you would consider including AoE targets?

Thanks for the clarification. I think he'll keep the Bone Finger ring on. Any chance you would consider including AoE targets? We did a lot of testing with both rulesets, and found that AoE SP Drain is very difficult to balance within the system. The best solution, and one that provides a good balance within the game, is the primary target solution. At this point, I do not think we will be reverting to any of the prototype rulesets -- the one we deployed is most likely here to stay. Feedback always welcome, but we've put weeks of work into SP Drain and this way seems best.

No worries. I'm one of those who figures it never hurts to ask, but I know the answer isn't always going to be yes. In fact, after my initial post, I figured you weren't going to let me cast spells that would return more SP than they cost!

SP Drain based on total damage with an AoE would be awesome! It would over power AoE attacks. Players could recover more SP from the AoE damage than the casting cost of the talent.

SP Drain is best utilized by high-damage single attack Talents. Ranged attacks drain just like melee.
This means that the SP Drain gear goes best with Firebolt KJ, Aimed Shot Tamalin, Ferocity Vraes, etc.
