The idea there is that the subscription is basically for people who are into the game enough that one huge war isn't enough, and they want to make custom wars.
They would be motivated by the prestige -- they own their own games, can invite players from paid, and basically become the "VIP" of the game.
The drawback here would be that if a subscribed player decided to stop playing, it would have a negative impact on other paid players who were in his or her games. There would be some social pressure there that would encourage VIP players to keep paying.
However, that's a lot less crappy than getting people hooked on digital hats.

I think as long as the only consumable IAP is the token/subscription system, you'll be fine.

I actually would really love this kind of game if it depicted the Guild Wars. Each map could be about the war over a Quadrant in the Core, have the Union vs the Guild, with Narvidian or Alien ships as neutral enemies that attack on sight...
Oh boy that would be great.

I think it would be better to let players form their own factions and alliances rather than set them on 2 teams, so that they would have to negotiate and watch out for backstabbers more, but maybe I'm just biased for letting players form their own teams because that's how it was in a tick based strategy MMO I used to play. If we do have it with 2 set player teams maybe the Alfaan and Xarth (I'm not sure if I spelled that right) war should also be considered, because the only information about it (as far as I know) is from a rumor that said "it defined the nature of the old galactic core 250,000 years ago." or something like that.

Or maybe give some love to the AoP universe by making it between the Factions there? Or the HoS kingdoms before the Shattering?

I voted yes. Anything you guys build has several things in common. 1) Honesty and Integrity. If there is an IAP we get to know up front. Although I always buy them, IAPs and Elite versions are not necessary to win and enjoy your games. 2) Trust and Flexibility. I know any new game you create is going to be fun and you will continue to improve it including gamer's input. 3) FUN! I never know what you will come up with next, it's like waiting to open a birthday present. 4) I'm nuts, sans frontal lobe, throw myself over a cliff fan, take my $3/month nothings too good for TB. Long live HOS AAhhhh! (bounces on head across the room).

I think paying players should be able to for and custom name factions Definitely. We have been discussing going very abstract with this game to put the focus on the player's alliances, made up politics and on-going wars. It might be fun to build the game in a setting we already use, although we hadn't really been thinking about it like that.

For the setting of the game, it could be different in different servers by switching out some graphics and text while keeping the same mechanics. Of course, some game mechanics might not make much sense in some server themes no matter how its implemented (for example, Battle Dawn has a few different server themes, and in their Fantasy theme boats go over mountains the same speed they go over seas).

Perhaps ... I mean I can imagine that technically but I have trouble figuring out how we'd ever pay for it. Love the idea, will definitely keep it in mind if this project starts to get traction!

Knowing the way Cory Trese codes I am sure things would be properly encapsulated to support this. The question is who is going to pay for all those additional art assets?
