Having played a bit more, I'm a bit confused about why sometimes Patrol Cards for ship encounters show a positive score while a very similar, possibly identical, card has a negative score. grävling, was this one of your issues? I'm going to pay closer attention to this next time I get to play. That might be a while, since my son is home on Spring Break. yes. While I can generally see the negative cards doing bad things to me when I draw them, and while I can see encountering a hostile ship that wants to attack you as a bad thing, there are a lot of ship encounters which, as far as I am informed, do nothing for me. This may, however, just be a matter of them not reporting whatever nice thing it was they did.

Improved reporting will be great! It's amazing to see the huge, complex game evolve.
In the future, we might improve the text on the Patrol Cards to hint at potential positive outcomes.
For example, there's a card that says "Ship Military: Encounter Local military patrol ships". This might be expanded to "Ship Military: Encounter Local military patrol ships. A chance to ______." The blank would be filled with a brief description of potential benefits like 'gain crew experience', 'gain reputation', etcetera.
One thing I like about this game is that it punishes indiscriminate violence. If you just fight everyone, you won't get far.
