I suggest the game include a brief New Player Quick Start Guide containing a limited number of tips about the most basic game functions. Things like: Contacts, Missions, Ship/Crew maintenance, etcetera. This might be achieved in 500 words, something short and easy to read. (The opposite of the wiki which gives a ton of detail on each thing.) Players new to the genre would find this especially helpful.
Accessing the Guide would be optional. In this way aligning with the STF design philosophy of not forcing anything on players.
The Guide would fill the gap for the new-to-the-genre player who wants some help right away, without having find it on the web, or read through an extensive help manual.

Sounds like a great suggestion. Want to write one? The Lore Library button from the game menu will eventually be enabled, and you will be able to read stuff in game there.

Careful what you suggest around here, jeez! ;-)
Seriously, I'm happy to work on this. I'm hoping others will chip in.
Do people agree that it is generally a good idea to start the game with these actions: 1) Level up your crew. 2) Land on the system at which you start, this will add data about the system to your map for later reference. 2A) Maybe buy some goods and/or top off your fuel while you're down there. 3) Find your closest mission giving contact, navigate to them, and select a non-violent mission. 4) Complete the mission
Along the way to completing your first mission you may need to... --Repair your ship --pay your crew (your crew morale will decrease if unpaid and they only levels up when paid, so keep current with crew pay) --heal crew
Maybe the goal of the 'Quick Start' is to guide the player through their first mission...
Here's a quick take on an opening to the guide: Captain, you are free to pillage and plunder. Do whatever you like. But, if you'll follow this advice, things may go a bit easier for you.

Guides of any kind would be awesome. It could get posted to the wiki, Steam and possibly even promoted into the game. We'll focus on Consult and the story here, if you want to work on penning a guide, I am sure it will be very useful to many!

Some grist for the quick start mill from another thread... On my first mission, ... 2) When trying to escape, I could not understand if I was getting more distance between the ship are not. There was no clue of weather we were getting closer or I was escaping 3) Why did I have to select move away twice? Is the second more movement? (by the way, I did not escape, but got trashed and looted) 4) Why do I have to select which guns to fire? Should they not be fire automatically? (By the way, I took me four round before I fire a shot.) Yep! We replied on that thread and contributor stood up a wiki page to try to address some of the questions. Hopefully release after next will make UX changes so that Contacts & Missions are unmissable.
