Great, that gives me a starting point. In some games that are plot-heavier (?) there are known triggers, and people try to "collect them all". I guess that will be pretty hard here. To take your example of the Call of the Strong, should I just cycle between all the Cadar systems until "something interesting" happens? Going out of your way to cycle through Cadar/De Valtos systems sounds tedious. I suggest you have a Cadar or DV captain so you would have a reason to naturally go to those systems without sacrificing the sandbox side of things. I did not mean to indicate that you should visit try to visit all the Cadar worlds. The stories are seeded to be as easy to find as possible. Travel the galaxy and stop at different ports of different Factions, that's good advice for sure. Less than half of the storylines are Faction-locked, and when they are its always a silly easy requirement - Call of the Strong is willing to start on any Cadar world that has 3 Starport and 5 Military. Nothing crazy here.

Thanks for the tip about Estelle, that is obviously the biggest plot. It is the only way into era 2, right? I reached that last night at level 20. I've reached the current end of the Val and Zette plotlines, and I have one save in the middle of Erik. (Maybe it is the end, not sure yet.)
I guess I will tour every cadar and de valtos world, talking to every smugggler and merchant contact, to see if I can get the others to trigger. Can you tip what class triggers "rabble crusher"?

If the story contact is there, he/she will automatically initiate conversation with you when you land. You don't need to go around trying to open there contact menus. I've found Rabble Crusher offered by a Military Commander. I, uh, I didn't succeed in that mission

Yeah, for stories like Call of the Strong, that kicks off immediately on landing.
In the case of story arcs like Rabble Crusher, they appear during Eras at Contacts who you are talking with.

So far there are only two eras, and the only transition is by finishing the estelle plotline with the three contacts in era 1. Is that right or am I already missing stuff? For the two faction plotlines and three contact plotlines you mention, are they in era 1 or 2?

I'm not sure this counts as a "bug" but I visited Estelle pretty late, after the war of assassins on Val had already ended. I guess her dialog tree only checks if the war has started, not if it has ended, because her first line is "From what I saw, I feel confident that justice will be delivered".

Is it true that if a contact like erik had a story mission button, and now he doesn't, then his storyline is finished? Can a contact have story missions hidden behind some trigger? If I have to keep checking back with him I can, but there was no clear "exit" message. The prince does have a clear exit message, even if it is a developer message and not a line delivered by the contact. (Something like "In the early access version this is the end of the prince's storyline"). Zette also doesn't have a clear "end of storyline" message after she becomes medical provost.

Is it possible that there is some other requirement for Call of the Strong, in addition to "visit a lot of Cadar planets"? In the starter map, I have now landed on every single one. Is there an era requirement, or similar? I have left early coalition, current year 233.

It can be, but its not a mechanic we are using. If there is no story offered and you don't have a pending quest log on their behalf, then the story is likely wrapped.

Or is it really so unlikely to trigger, or there is some other hidden requirement?

Nope, no hidden requirements at all. You could send in a saved game and I could take a look and see why it hasn't started in your game. It's possible that is due to the rest of the simulation's inputs.

Away from my gaming computer till Monday, which may be after your break starts. I'll send it then. Is there a faq on the best way to send a save?
