I have played the Valencia plot line of the main quest, and I suppose there are Erik and Zette versions of the plot which I will try. But, so far I am not able to find any other plotlines. Is there an inventory somewhere of the written plot lines? I find that a sandbox is fun, but it is more fun if it has a sprinkling of written plots.
(Spoiler, but it's for the simplest plot variant)
In the Valencia plot, is there a branch where you can actually satisfy the Hunna? I was sent on a three part fetch quest to get X1 items of type Y1 and put in a stash on planet Z1, and then get X2 items of type Y2 and put on Z2, etc. But, I didn't have many trade permits and nobody I had a permit to sold the item. I had to chase around to get the trade permit or find the item. A few weeks before the fetch quest expired, I was told that Valencia had decided to join the Hunna. I have the feeling that we are supposed to be chasing around endlessly until she decides that; but it's a substantial time investment to retry to reach any plot branch that may exist.

There is the Estelle plotline. The Arbiter that you escorted to oversee the case with Aetaan Char can be found in the Farfallen Rim quadrant, and she has ambitions.
There are also smaller storylines that will randomly appear after you play for a while. Some of them are pretty cool.
More story stuff will be added as the game continues to be developed.

Is there an inventory somewhere of the written plot lines? I find that a sandbox is fun, but it is more fun if it has a sprinkling of written plots. The "sprinkling" of plots are simply avenues you take to arrive at similar crossroads, and each path differs wildly from the other, and the crossroads themselves all have interesting plot points, I assure you! (Spoiler, but it's for the simplest plot variant) In the Valencia plot, is there a branch where you can actually satisfy the Hunna? Yep, you can fully assist! It is very cool what happens when you do, what she chooses, and why, too. I highly recommend replaying it after you have proper trade agreements or the ability to steal/get the items required. I believe each path has "ultimate failure" outcomes, as well, and even those storylines are great, in my opinion.

Thanks! Is there a guide for the current version, which shows what is likely to trigger the other plots? It is only fun for a little while to wander around and try things that don't have any effect. Obviously these are spoilers and not everybody will want to know. I looked on the official wiki startraders.gamepedia.com/Star_Traders_Wiki but there is no list. Since each captain only has one save, what techniques do people use to explore the plotlines? In other games with plot, it is pretty common to have a collection of save games, for example to spend the first couple of hours doing the basic fetch quests, up to the point of having some experience and ready to talk to the prince. Then save, and keep the save game from just before that. If I have completely messed up, like failing to acquire trade permits or whatever, it may be necessary to restart from scratch; but it would save those few hours of the same startup. I have seen that you can copy your entire save directory, and maybe that is enough, if you keep enough copies with good enough notes/directory names. But if you have several sets of restart points, it will quickly become unmanageable. Maybe the TB's feel that a roguelike with permadeath and single save is a key for their market, but that single save makes it hard to explore this way.

daveal - thanks for the feedback! At this point, I don't think anyone has written up a guide of the different story arcs. Hopefully someone in the community might pick that up soon!

Can you comment on how to pick up even one? So far (only 30 hours) I have only ever found the one prince plotline. Granted it has at least three main branches and I don't know how many sub-branches.
Where is most of the active feedback coming? From this board, or steam, or somewhere else? I find the steam guides good, but in general steam threads tend to be high volume / high noise. I haven't looked on reddit or elsewhere yet.

Our forum, Steam forum, Discord (https://discordapp.com/invite/TreseBrothers), Twitch, email, twitter, etc.
Storylines are seeded every 3-5 years. No guarantee you'll meet the requirements to encounter them, but the system drops them in. Generally, travel the galaxy -- that would be the biggest thing to do.

Most of the other plot lines require the engine to inject them to your location. However, some of them are tied to specific Factions, so visiting lots of Cadar holdings, for example, makes it more likely that you will encounter the contact behind Call of the Strong, while visiting De Valtos holdings will help uncover the man behind the De Rivesh Legacy story

In some games that are plot-heavier (?) there are known triggers, and people try to "collect them all". I guess that will be pretty hard here. To take your example of the Call of the Strong, should I just cycle between all the Cadar systems until "something interesting" happens?

More or less, but as Andrew said, there are roughly 3-5 years between story injections. The best way would be to visit as many Cadar worlds as you could while doing other missions, trading, spying, etc.

Going out of your way to cycle through Cadar/De Valtos systems sounds tedious. I suggest you have a Cadar or DV captain so you would have a reason to naturally go to those systems without sacrificing the sandbox side of things.
