I was searching for some terrible pay to win game my friend wanted me to download called Galaxy Online 2. While downloading, I clicked some "related" links whose names reminded me of the awesome space trading games in my past. BBS door games like Trade Wars or the multitude of single player options. About this time I realize the entire lexicon of space based trading/combat game titles consists of about 6 or 7 total words, arranged in different order.
After about a dozen clicks, I then saw "star traders". I remember Trade Wars being based on some 70s game named Star Trader so I clicked it. Sounded pretty cool, downloaded it. I liked it a lot, but it got a bit too easy once I figured out what I was doing (I was on normal difficulty). I just flew around blowing everyone up. Seemed pretty shallow but still well above average for a mobile game. I enjoyed the trial enough to download CK after seeing it on the ST opening menu. Enjoyed CK a bit less, but still kinda fun. I ran into some bug so I asked for help on the forums. Got a response immediately almost, so I decided to buy both as elite as appreciation for the effort and what I thought to be two pretty good games.
Loading up ST elite and really noticing the ship/armament unlocks for some reason changed my entire mindset about Star Traders. In addition to being a space trading game, I sort of started to view it as a roguelike almost (which have always been my two favorite genres). Seeing the challenges made me realize I would need to play many different games, with different classes and difficulties. I cranked the difficulty up as high as I dared and changed the mindset from death being something to avoid, to death being an inevitability and just something to learn from. In attempt to fend off death for a bit longer, I went to the forums to read a few posts. It was really only then when I realized how complex and well thought out the game was. I went from thinking the game was good, to thinking it is incredibly awesome and worthy of telling other people about.
So, thats how I found out about these games, why I decided to buy them, and how I decided they were good enough to encourage others to buy them. Once I play enough ST to bore myself to death I will return to CK to play that a bit more as well. I haven't even really begun to play that yet (only just made it to NBZ), but I do have high expectations.

tman - wow, thank you for the explaining your journey so well! It helps give us insight into how to get that "ah-ha this is =awesome=" moment earlier into the cycle! I have to ask -- have you tried TA?

I actually found TA and ST through another forum. Picked up a smart phone about 4 years ago and managed to keep it totally "business" for about 2 years. At that point a friend of mine bought an iphone and was raving about the amount of apps on the app store. I decided I'd check out the google app store, and was a little disappointed by what I found. So I switched on the internet, checked the Something Awful forums (please don't hold it against me) and checked out their thread on android games. I read the description of TA (Space Hulk-esque tactical war game) and ST (a turn based Escape Velocity Nova) and fell in love right there. Now I have TA, ST, and CK Elite and am a proud backer of HoS.

I was searching for turn-based tactical games, and found Cyber Knights RPG. I loved the premise so much and the reviews were so strong, I didn't even try the 'demo', I just bought Elite. I then bought Elite Star Traders, again no 'demo'... Then a couple of days ago I bought Elite Pirates and Elite Templars and downloaded Heroes :-D Cyber Knights is my current favourite, but I get the feeling Star Straders is the biggie everyone loves. Not that I don't; I've put more hours into Elite and X3 than I can imagine, I love the space hero / trader concept, I just haven't put as much time into ST as CK.

Think I was looking for xcom clones... that was my fave game a decade or so ago... wanted to see if phone version existed. Relive the nostalgia. Hopping from app to app I came upon star traders (not TA which is more similar). I enjoyed star traders for a while and it impressed me, no permissions required. Decided I'd check out other games by TB. Once I found Templar Assault I was hooked... that game has seen more screen time than any other app on my phone. I did enjoy Cyber Knights too for a few weeks but burned out on it eventually. Really pumped when HoS came out... I'd not played many games on phone for months... Its funny... about a year ago when I was addicted to TA my son was asking me to teach him to program at about the same time... I thought it would be fun to do a fantasy version of TA. Started writing a simple C# program: turn based combat where you control a wizard, a knight, archer, and a king... you had to get the king out of a cave whilst being attacked by giant spiders. Never got very far... just had sprites moving round screen... my son lost interest when he saw how much work is involved (too ambitious a project to teach him with). Kind of a relief... last thing I want to see after sitting in front of code for 10hrs is more code. Anyhow... pretty cool... HoS has the knight (Outlander), archer (thief) and magician... and fighting giant spiders in turn based combat in a cave... and I didn't have to write it!... course my son didn't learn to code either... can I send him to you next summer?...

Well... I stumbled across CK while looking for Games for my Android Phone I had received as a Christmas gift. And now, I'm a member for almost a year. Well, I was caught as soon I read the description of CK. Matrix?!?! Set in 2217??!!!??!?! Quiek! I want dat thing!! And for almost half a year, I've been lovely fine with the content you two put into the free version... that was when I noticed the gift cards were released to the European market! The first thing I did: Purchasing CK Elite. And, even after a year, I love this game! Sent from my HTC Desire C using proboards

How did I come to find the Trese Brothers.
Hmmm.
It all began a dark and stormy afternoon. The tempest above had caused power to fail. Paradoxically I still had cell phone coverage. Someone shoudl explain to me how come cell phone towers have power while everyone else is out.
A hallucination murmurs, "They're called generators, oh Grandiose one."
"SHUT UP! Don't interrupt my rhetoric with logic! Get back into the back of my mind where you belong, little creep!"
"Yes master!" The echoing presence receded.
"As I was saying, before I interrupted myself, I had no power. Yet, I wanted to do something, anything. I was bored to the point of finding interest in staring at my cream colored wall. (Incidentally, if you stare at a wall long enough you notice a whole fauna of things. Tiny spiders, a small ant or two, dust motes tumbling by .... It's like a vertical ecosystem. Simply fascinating.)
An idea popped into my head. "Hey maybe there is a free RPG game in the play store." And thus, by a slip of the fingers, I ended up looking for a Sci-fi RPG ... and wallah ... Star Traders RPG came up.
"Actually, master, you where looking for Gurk II and couldn't find it. Thus, you stumbled on...."
"For the love of ME, you incidentally intelligent lunacy, SHUT UP!"
