Resurrecting an old discussion...
I didn't see anyone mention Escape Velocity, or its sequels EV Override and EV Nova. I played the original Escape Velocity on the Mac, and later EV Nova on Windows, and they were brilliant. You could capture other ships after disabling them, then either take those ships to a planet to sell them, or have them fly as an escort squadron. I think you could capture up to 5 other ships with EV Nova.
Played Space Rangers 2, that was going nicely, but the game ended just when I finally worked my way up to owning a decent ship.
Tried X2, but my flight sim skills are hopeless and I had heaps of trouble just trying to fly my ship into dock at planets. Gave up on that one in frustration.

Any chance you'll let us "capture" other ships in Star Traders 2, Cory? It probably makes the game balancing a little harder, but EV managed to make the game both playable with a solo pilot, and also not *too* easy with escorts. If we can put a prize crew on them to take them to a civilized planet and sell at the Star Dock, perhaps we might even earn more than just a few pennies for each one too!

It's possible -- a lot of the reasoning behind the rules in ST aren't really balance based, they're game world based.
I'll have to dig up some of my earlier threads about the meaning of Captain, the story of the Star Trader and the lessons of the Exodus.
Future games will certainly spend a lot of time exploring that rich and complex backstory.

I definately recomend X^3 Terran Conflict... 6 factions all with full economies and separate reputation lvls and unique ships and weapons and also 2 different pirate factions and 2 hostile alien factions, multiple plot lines, wide variety of contracts from surveilance to delivery to construction to straight up assination, u can fly ur own ship and command as massive a fleet as u can afford from small fighters to massive destroyer, and nearly 200 sectors to explore (maybe more to be honest i still havent fully explored the whole galaxy )... one of the things that drew me to this game and convinced me to buy it was its manh similarities to Star Traders
