How does critical hit work with Area of Effect spells? Is just the initial target hit with the extra damage (my impression)? Or a roll for every monster hit by the AoE?
Totally unrelated: when a monster does "20 elemental damage", does that mean 20 fire AND 20 ice AND 20 earth AND 20 lightning ? And each of these 20 is actually x base physical damage plus 1D(20 - x) magical, right?

krakun - Critical % is rolled for every monster. 20 Elemental Damage does indicate 20 Fire AND 20 Ice AND 20 Earth ... each rolled separately against your Resistance + Fire Res (etc).

Regarding accuracy of damage descriptors and soaking, I think I am notice irregarularities in the numbers.
Example, a bowrat doing up to 40 damage, hits Kincaid and does 26 damage. However, Kincaid has 7 toughness and 26 armor. At max 40 damage, the roll should be reduced by 4 to 7 and 14-26, correct? With the low soak number, damage should be reduced by 18 maximum for a top end damage of 22. Is the 40 damage of the bowrat an approximate and more internally? Kincaid also has armor bonuses from equipment and pure flame shield. Maybe these are not applied correctly?
Am I misunderstanding the calculations?
Also, with attacking ratkin and high level choking ash, my characters often do more than their top end damage to 0 armor enemies. I've seen 1 to 2 more damage then their display. Again, are the numbers on the display rounded anyway? Just some details noticed during waves of ratkin slaying.

You do seem to be misunderstanding the calculations -- at least that is what I get reading your estimations of damage and armor.
There is a useful Combat Details thread that contains the key elements related to how armor and toughness are rolled, and how damage is applied and summarized.
One that I can say with 100% certainty is that the effects from equipment and spells like pure flame shield are being applied correct, you need not worry about that with Heroes.

phaze - the stats for a Bowrat ("up to 40 damage") are not being personalized to Kincaid. They are reporting on the weapon or attack the Bowrat is using, just like you see Kincaid's sword says "11-21 dmg" On the max damage with Kjartan, maybe you are misunderstanding how damage is calculated? Check the OP for more details. Examples or screenshots might help.

A screenshot is not possible.
As a longtime forum reader, I've followed the combat mechanics thread very closely.
Triple checking the formulas leads to the same conclusion. The max damage versus what is displayed upon attacking seems to occasionally be inconsistent with expected values.
I'll try to be clear in writing. Bowrat has max damage up to 40, so I calculate how many hits Kincaid can take if he doesn't dodge anything. I apply his soak totals to the bowrat's max damage and determine a number then observe the display damage to Kincaid. The damage can exceed my calculated total after soak.
I am trying to explain this discrepancy.
I can provide all of kincaids stats and the bowrats listed stats if someone wants to verify.
I also observe that player damage to enemies sometimes exceeds the display damage. Example, Selen has a bow doing 11 to 17 damage with a ring +2 for dam of 11 to 19. Attacking enemies with 0 armor, I've observed up to 22 damage with a regular attack. No other source of added damage. Thus, something seems off. This holds for physical attacks from Selen, Kincaid, and Kyera. Kjartan attacks seldom in my groups, cursing everything for the others.
I've noticed this on multiple versions over months, never said anything as it is a minor issue relative to waiting for new content.

phaze - if you'd like to provide all of the relevant stats, we could take a look. I have re-checked the equations as of this morning and I don't see how this is possible by the math we're using.

Kincaid: Armor 26 - kallassian overcoat 16, banded bracers 2, kallassian boots 4, pure flame shield 4 armor added.
Con 7, toughness 7
Bowrat: up to 40 damage. No other damage. No shaman present. This is the pincer attack into the east farm though I've seen this in other places. No level ups mid battle. All characters at 7. No buffs running out.
Clearly did 26 damage which seems to be above the soak max damage calculated. I'm positive a giant rat hit kjartan for more than was the max damage as his HP went below one-hit kill range that I did not expect. The surprise attack was nasty as the giant rat got a full set of attacks on the squishy character.
For the Selen example. Light bow 11-17. Ring of the bear +2. No other bonuses. Choking ash 5 on all enemies, leaving 0 armor. Unknown enemy toughness. Occasional see onscreen attack damage above 20. Like 20-22 damage. I've seen this on other characters in different playthroughs. Characters with 1 ap weapons are most noticed due to the higher number of attacks to witness.
Running iPhone 4s. Version 8.1.2. Game version 3.2.21. Though this has been consistent over multiple versions.

I'm checking my understanding...
Parrying with two weapons only gets the best parry? Does shield and weapon get BOTH or just the shield? Does the stat dex/str for the weapon add dice for parrying or only the char. weapon skill and iten bonus, and if str or dex add dice is it only for the matching weapon when duel wielding?
Sorry for the noob question, just starting the game a few days ago and don't know all what has been posted and explained, just going thru the boards a bit at a time to help me figure out char builds and such...

In Dual Wield, only the highest Parry is used. For a weapon & shield, the two Parry values are summed. Therefore, fighting with a shield can be a far superior defensive tactic. On the question about Dex / Str -- neither of these Attributes are used in melee defense. Dex is used all the time ranged defense, but that is not related to your weapon setup. For attacking, only one of Dex or Str is used, and it is based on the primary weapon (the weapon in the top slot).
