If you're looking to cripple the ship ITSELF, you MUST be using chain shot. This cannon type is designed to target the masts of the ship. Keep in mind that the more damage you deal to the ship, the less it sells for. If you want to slaughter the crew while leaving the ship alone (pirates use this well), then you need to use grapeshot. Either of these upgrades will lessen the chance of you actually sinking the ship, while either disabling the ship, or lowering enemy crew counts to levels that make them useless. I would avoid carronades at all costs, as these deal catastrophic damage to everything they touch. Also, and forgive me if this has been mentioned: Long Guns are meant to be used at 2+ range, the Cannons are meant to be used at point blank range, as they are wildly inaccurate at any range other than 1. All the above mentioned upgrades are best used at 1 range IMO. Thanks. And with that, I should be able to go be a pirate like I want to be.

If I remember correctly, you should be in "close" range. Gotta see the whites of their eyes in order to pop 'em with the cannon! Didn't work. Did more damage though! Though... Too much damage... I sunk the ship.

I know I still haven't resolved the issue on my last thread, but I got a basic question or two, that's less important to me. One, how exactly do you play as a smuggler? ST or Age of Pirates. Next, for Age of Pirates is there anything special about being a corsair/buccaneer?

How can I cripple the ship in Age of Pirates, since in ST you shoot out the engines, how do you do it in Age of Pirates?

Zer0Winds - can you give more information? How do you get beat? What tactic are you using? The game is not ST RPG, so you can't just port tactics over directly. I love my pirate captains -- without a doubt, the most fun to play for me. Just sailing the high seas pillaging and plundering, what a life! I love pirating, on ST and on some similar games, that's why I want to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I try shooting broadside at first, I try getting closer, eventually I get close enough to board, once I do, I try boarding them, and it usually fails, and they either get away, destroy my hull, or defeat me in a duel. And these are merchants I'm talking about. So either I'm just really bad, or I need a new tactic.

Well, I just start as a pirate, and I'm looking for a merchant, and they always beat me. I never survive long enough to get better cannons.

Is it just me, or is being a pirate on Age of Pirates pointless? On Star Traders you could shoot out the engines and loot the ship, but now you can only board, and no matter what happens I never win, and I take extremely heavy damage, so any little bit of loot I do get, I spend on repairing my ship...
