I'm partial to the Obliterator Cruiser. I've killed quite a few Xeno with it.

Back when I was a free captain, I almost always used the Thulun Longbow or Javat Cutter

Pirate Skylift
No I'm serious, you can often get this ship one way or another very early game and with upgrades can remain effective nearly indefinitely. Before the ship designer came out this was what I looked for at start of every game and even when I had the money to buy better ships I'd usually have one or two stashed in drydock for emergency backup.

I don't think this ship will help you catch an Alien cargo ship if you miss in other ships ... the engines are enough to power your ship efficiently, but won't win any speed competitions. 42 engines sounds great, but you've got a massive bulk of 40 hull to shunt around. The biggest thing going for it is the huuuuuuuuuuge array of torps. Seeing one of these looming up into range is frightening as it looks like a gigantic pin-cushion, and those pins hurt. However, given its bulk, any agile ship will run rings around it and once you place a few good shots, the ship becomes a dead duck in water. A bit like this really

Pirate Skylift .... really? I haven't got the stats for one of them there Skylifts, but I'm sure I sank a fair few, even with the Vae. I'll look more carefully next time I encounter one

The battle ships are open as soon as you buy a military rank or promotion. The group you sign on with will sell a handful at varying prices.

That's great qbspy, but I noticed a ship named, simply, battleship for sale on Remcoole when my Captain was Level 20. Military rank 3 and maybe 25 or so faction status. kubla

Funny enough the Steel Song flagship is actually really good. Some thing like 40 hull 40 engines 70 sails and 120 cargo

The Javat Cutter and Honor of Thulun are great ships that you can readily find because they are rank ships. I do remember the Royal Class ship that came out a long long time ago. It had 20 hull and 40 sails and 40 engines. It had a good sized cargo hold, and packed enough guns and torps to be dominant in combat. It got nerfed a little - but on my old old device, I still have an original mint-condition ship in dry dock
