My personal vote is to have no more than a couple on offense and specced for torps. Gun battles should be fought by fighters (empty vudka crates as some like to call them) that are easily replaceable and not the fine china of an expensive cruiser.

Respectfully disagree. Railgun Cruisers are my second most effective ship in every simulation I have run so far. They are outstripped only by my 2 AP Fighters, and that's only because the Fighters get two attacks per round. When specced for both medium armor and mid-high avoidance they are able to absorb much of an enemy attack and retaliate same turn with a Railgun that just churns out high amounts of damage. An example of my current game's first incarnation is this: Terrible pic, I realize, but my tablet won't take pics while in-game... This guy has taken quite a beating, but the captain has been given commendations for his recent soiree into Xeno Deep Territory in his hunt for a World Killer that evaded sensor range. Valiant Railcannon at 9-27(?) and I think the 10 armor upgrade fit quite well. Of course the points can be allocated differently, but this class/style ship provides the true backbone of my fleets.

I suggest a blend of the styles, much like I use in my sims. I use a few Torpedo Cruisers as fire support, while I use Gun Cruisers as squadron command vessels, with Gun Fighters and Assault Fighters as support.
I usually use:
2 Torpedo Cruisers 1 Gun Cruiser 3 Gun Fighters 2 Assault Fighters 1-2 Repair Carriers 0-2 Refuel Carriers
per defense or offensive Fleet. It is a versatile Battlegroup formation that mixes all sorts of attack power to allow for the ability to respond to any situation, and this allows for use of defense fleets as part of an offensive push. This has served me well on Crazy Difficulty since the Alpha.

The Raptor MIII's are not exactly disposable. Highly upgraded fighters are quite expensive and take as long to build as a stock cruiser. So we have 1 vote for rail gun and 1 vote for torp boat. En1gma just a side discussion about fighter design. I used to be all about the 1 ap guns, but recently I've been going with the 2ap guns for the higher accuracy and bigger counterattack. It's an interesting debate Templar Commands current research is heading towards warbarges at the moment. I'm hoping after design decisions the next cycle will be poking the Hornets nest with a very big stick The question will be do we assult the nyktos that infested the planned second expansion zone or attack the sidtax on the far west?

We need to eradicate the Nyktos cluster nearest us. They cannot be allowed to attack Core Space!

We need to eradicate the Nyktos cluster nearest us. They cannot be allowed to attack Core Space! I agree. It would seem foolish to ignore the Xenos at our doorstep. Templar CdrPlatypus maybe we should look into some lightly armored fighters with a 2ap reactor and a 1 ap gun to support the Raptor MIII? With a couple repair carriers on support, we should be able to forego armor on the fighters.

Let's get the Xenos out of our backyard before we go annihilating the other side of the sector.

“Sir we'll soon be in Xeno territory.” said ntsheep.
“Good, ready the weapons systems. We don't know what defenses they have. We'll save the heavy rounds for later. Loads the cocktail ones first and put the foot longs on standby.” ntsheep replied to himself.
“Uhhh, about that Sir, there was a problem during cargo loading. We only have Kielbasa's and Knackwurst.”
“WHAT! How did this happen! Who's to blame for this travesty! No foot longs! Please tell me at least someone remembered the mustard!”
“We've got Spicy, Brown, and Dijon.”
“Good! I relish the coming battle.”
ntsheep whispered to himself,
“Do you think I should tell him we forgot the pickles?”
“If you do, you'll be the first thing fired out a torp tube.”

That ship is so badass. Ahem... Yes, commander, I believe that Tank Class will prove most valuable when it comes to open war. I'm honored to have it bear my name, and I will be sure to pick none but the most skilled commanders to command them.

**PRIORITY TRANSMISSION** **FROM TEMPLAR COMMAND** **TO ALL FACTION LEADERS** REPORT FROM THE S-W - FRONTAs you can see there is a significant Xeno infestation in the former 2nd Expansion Zone. We are massing forces in the green + yellow space of our single foothold while research on warbarges is ongoing and an offensive fleet is being assembled. Our first major strategic decision is which system to attempt to purg first once we have a fleet ready for an offensive. Politics Alta mesa and Zenrin are in a Spy War...srsly guys right now?!
