hmmm ... this would actually mean that Easy is the new Normal - as there is no kiddy-friendliness. Easy = "you get Xenos that are at best, at your level". In other games, Easy = Enemies are lower level and easier to defeat. Alternate view - "Xenos" are actually pretty wimpy, and so you'd need them to be at least 1 level better than you in order to make them do more than stand still and say "Shoot Me". I'm not complaining about the difficulty levels - they aren't meant to be for the faint-hearted or the hardly fainted or the quaint farters. Templar Battle Forces really are the ultimate bad-asses after all

Maybe we'll call the first one Normal and get rid of Easy =)

Cory Trese- have you had enough requests in your previous games (I know I saw a few for Heroes) for a -very- easy mode? Something to consider, as your games tend to be fairly challenging...

Harder difficulties levels require an in depth knowledge of the game mechanics, maps ect..so we might not really have time during the alpha.
I am curious to see what testers will choose,I will stick to normal myself.

Assuming there are multiple save slots, I'll make one or two of each difficulty, just to test them against themselves. I'm not looking forward to Hell mode, though...

Hell (or Ironman Nightmare, still trying to decide) is my favorite difficulty. I'm really quite fond of it -- lots of feedback yet to collect, of course. There is something simple about the "you cannot die or start over" rule =)

We occasionally get those requests, yeah. Very often, however, the request is actually for something other than difficulty. The most common case is related to game pace. It's a fun challenge. We're working very hard to provide a very wide variety of difficulties.

Cory Trese- It sounds brutal. I'll give it a shot for sure, but I don't have the highest hopes. I have issues making it past the escape from Red Hill on Nightmare, so I'm positive I'll get slaughtered, but I'll give it an honest effort nonetheless.

Maybe instead of an "Easy" setting, it could be replaced with "Tutorial" if there's going to be a Tutorial in the game since most tutorials tend to have low difficulty settings to help ease players in.

That's interesting idea. There is a tutorial, that's actually the first set of levels we're putting out to the alpha team. This is by far our most polished and planned alpha test to date -- I think we'll be in a great position to dig right into balancing, polishing and incorporating feedback!

We're working very hard to provide a very wide variety of difficulties. Or the gamer is missing a key feature of the system and showing them a basic let's play fixes it. Common examples for Heroes are not using buffs or curses, or refusing to use anything by 0 SP attacks and getting frustrated that you get whooped! Addressing this by changing the difficulty setting is not a good way forward.

I'm starting om Hard and plan on shooting through a couple maps to get the feel for the game. After that I may jump up difficulty and see if I can handle ironman!
So far I'll say that Hard seems just about right. The enemies are tough and you have to be smart with your moves BUT it seems fair. So far, anyways, haha.

I had the same idea as johndramey, but am finding Hard to be hard. I can't seem to get through the second level. I may be pushing too hard though. The xenos seemingly spawning anywhere and attacking the same turn is really hard to deal with. There's no way to make a defensive perimeter.

That is the critical ability.
